Chapter 7 - Siege at Marblehead

The storm over the Marblehead coast had elevated into a full-fledged northeastern gale. Twenty-foot waves crashed against the black granite cliffs beneath the safehouse, sending freezing spray high into the air.

Inside the library, Clara sat near the window, watching the rain strike the glass.

Suddenly, the power cut out.

The warm glow of the chandeliers vanished, plunging the massive stone mansion into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

Clara stood up instantly, setting her tea down. "Leo?" she called out into the dark.

From the hallway, the sound of sudden, heavy muffled gunshots echoed through the house.

THWIP-THWIP-THWIP!

Screams followed. The heavy metallic thud of bodies hitting the hardwood floors echoed down the corridor.

"CLARA!" Leo yelled, stumbling into the library in the dark, clutching his bruised ribs. "They're inside! People with night-vision goggles just came through the terrace doors!"

Clara’s heart seized in terror. Dominic’s guard...

She ran to the library door and peeked into the main hallway. In the dim moonlight filtering through the high windows, she saw three of Dominic’s guards lying motionless on the floor. Standing over them were four men in dark tactical gear, led by a massive mercenary carrying a suppressed shotgun—Vance.

"Search every room!" Vance barked to his men. "Moretti wants the girl dead! Find her and her brother!"

Clara backed into the library, slamming the heavy oak door shut and sliding the iron security bolt into place.

"They're coming for us," Clara whispered, her mind racing at lightning speed.

"What do we do?!" Leo panicked, his voice high-pitched with terror. "We don't have guns! There's no way out of this room except the balcony!"

Clara looked around the dark library.

She was not a soldier. She did not know how to shoot a gun.

But she was a baker. She understood chemistry, heat, and physical properties. And she was not going to let these monsters hurt her brother again.

"Follow me!" Clara commanded, pulling Leo toward the private kitchenette connected to the library suite.

Inside the kitchenette were shelves stocked with high-proof cooking spirits, commercial cleaning chemicals, bags of dusting flour, and a heavy butane catering torch used for caramelizing sugar.

"Leo, take those two sacks of flour!" Clara ordered frantically, grabbing a heavy glass jug of ninety-percent pure grain alcohol. "Dump them into the center of the library floor! Dust the air! Make it thick!"

"Flour?!" Leo stammered, confused. "Clara, what are you—"

"FLOUR DUST IS EXPLOSIVE, LEO! DO IT NOW!"

Leo didn't ask another question. He grabbed the two twenty-pound paper sacks of flour, sprinted into the library, ripped them open, and began dumping them violently onto the floor, using a sofa cushion to fan the white powder into a thick, dense cloud floating in the air.

Clara poured the entire jug of grain alcohol across the entryway carpet just behind the heavy oak door. She picked up the butane catering torch, thumbing the igniter. A bright, roaring blue flame burst from the nozzle.

Outside the library door, heavy boots pounded against the floor.

BOOM!

A tactical shotgun blast blew the iron lock off the library door.

The heavy oak door swung inward. Vance and two mercenaries stepped into the room, their weapons raised.

"Found you, little baker," Vance sneered, stepping onto the alcohol-soaked carpet.

Clara stood at the far end of the library behind the sofa, holding the roaring butane torch in her right hand.

"You picked the wrong bakery," Clara said, her voice dropping into an icy, unwavering tone.

She thrust the blue flame of the torch into the dense cloud of suspended flour dust.

FOOOOOOM!

A catastrophic dust explosion erupted inside the room.

A wave of orange fire tore through the suspended flour particles like a thermobaric bomb, instantly igniting the alcohol-soaked carpet beneath the mercenaries' feet.

A blinding roar of heat and light threw Vance and his men backward through the doorway, their tactical gear engulfed in flames. Screams of terror filled the burning hallway as the mercenaries tumbled down the stairs, trying desperately to extinguish the fire.

The explosion blew out the library's stained-glass windows, sending wooden splinters and shattered glass flying across the coast.

Clara tackled Leo to the floor behind the heavy leather sofa, covering their heads as burning flour dust rained down around them.

The mansion’s fire sprinklers suddenly kicked in, showering cold water over the burning library.

Clara pushed herself up, gasping for air, her chef’s coat covered in soot. "Leo! Are you alright?!"

"I'm... I'm okay!" Leo gasped, staring in absolute awe at his sister. "You... you blew them up with flour!"

From the ruined doorway, a scorched, bleeding figure crawled through the smoke.

It was Vance.

His face was burned, his tactical jacket smoldering, but he was still breathing. In his trembling hand, he raised his heavy pistol, aiming it directly at Clara’s chest.

"You... crazy... bitch..." Vance wheezed, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Clara froze, staring down the black barrel of the gun.

BANG!

A single, deafening gunshot echoed through the ruined hallway.

Vance’s head snapped back, his body collapsing flat onto the wet carpet, motionless.

Standing in the shattered doorway behind Vance, drenched in rain, his silver pistol smoking, stood Dominic Russo.

Behind him, thirty armed Russo enforcers flooded the hallway, securing the mansion within seconds.

Dominic dropped his weapon to his side and sprinted across the ruined library, his heart in his throat.

"CLARA!" Dominic roared, throwing his arms around her, pulling her small, soot-covered frame against his chest with terrifying intensity.

He pressed his face into her hair, his body shaking uncontrollably. "God... Clara... I thought I was too late... I thought I lost you..."

Clara wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face in his wet suit jacket, tears finally breaking through her fierce exterior. "You came," she sobbed. "You came back for me."

Dominic pulled back slightly, his large hands framing her face, examining every inch of her for injuries. His amber eyes were shining with raw, unadulterated emotion.

May you like

"I will always come back for you," Dominic whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. He leaned down and pressed his lips to hers in a deep, passionate, desperate kiss that swept away the smell of smoke, blood, and rain.

Clara kissed him back with everything she had, holding onto the man who had brought light into her dark world.
