Chapter 5 - The Shadows of the Past

The night of the gala arrived with breathtaking splendor.

The Patterson mansion was illuminated by thousands of fairy lights woven through the grand oak trees in the backyard. Classical violin music drifted through the high-ceilinged reception halls, mingling with the murmur of sophisticated conversations and the clinking of crystal champagne flutes.

Dominic stood near the grand staircase in a tailored charcoal tuxedo, greeting the incoming executives with effortless charm. But his eyes kept drifting toward the top of the stairs.

At precisely 7:30 PM, the murmur of the crowd near the foyer quieted.

All heads turned upward.

There stood Ryan. He wasn't in a wheelchair. He wore a miniature custom tuxedo, standing tall between his forearm crutches, his posture straight, his chin up.

And right beside him, wearing an elegant, understated emerald-green evening gown that left no doubt she belonged in this room, walked Norah King.

A collective hush fell over the room. Several high-profile investors stared in astonishment, while local society gossips whispered behind their fans.

Dominic didn't wait for them to reach the bottom. He walked briskly up the steps, stopping right in front of his son.

“You look like a million bucks, champ,” Dominic said, his voice thick with emotion.

“Norah picked the tie,” Ryan grinned, adjusting his collar.

Dominic extended his hand to Norah. She took it, her hand steady, her eyes shining with unshed tears. Together, the three of them descended the grand staircase into the brightly lit ballroom.

The applause started small—first from Marcus, the head of security, who stood near the back with a proud grin, then from a few sympathetic executives, and finally, a rolling wave of polite, respectful applause filled the entire room.

For the next two hours, the evening was an absolute triumph. Ryan walked across the hardwood floor to greet guests, showing a poise and courage that left everyone spellbound.

However, trouble never stays away for long when envy is present.

Around 9:30 PM, as Dominic was speaking with the lead European investor, a sharp, frantic voice cut through the music near the conservatory entrance.

“I demand to know who allowed this fraud into the house!”

The crowd parted. Standing near the glass doors was a well-dressed, middle-aged man with thinning gray hair and an expression of venomous rage. It was Arthur Sterling, the former director of the prestigious Chicago Pediatric Rehabilitation Clinic—and the man who had fired Norah King two years prior.

Dominic’s blood ran cold. He excused himself immediately and strode across the room, his eyes fixed on Sterling.

“Mr. Sterling,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. “You are not on the guest list. How did you get in here?”

Sterling sneered, pointing a trembling finger directly at Norah, who stood calmly beside Ryan.

“I didn't come for your party, Patterson! I came to expose the criminal you’ve got walking around your mansion! Do you know who she is? Her name isn't just Norah King—she’s a disgraced physical therapist who was blacklisted from every medical facility in Illinois! She was accused of medical malpractice and patient endangerment!”

The ballroom went dead silent. The violin music stopped abruptly. Dozens of high-society guests turned to stare in shock.

Ryan instinctively gripped his crutches tighter, looking up at Norah with sudden fear. “Norah...?”

Norah didn't flinch. Her face remained composed, though a deep, sorrowful shadow passed over her eyes.

Dominic stepped in front of Norah and Ryan, shielding them with his broad shoulders. He looked at Sterling with a gaze so lethal it made the older man take an involuntary step backward.

“Careful what you say next, Sterling,” Dominic warned softly. “My security team can escort you out, or the police can carry you out in handcuffs. Take your pick.”

“You’re protecting a fraud!” Sterling shouted, desperate for attention. “Two years ago at my clinic, she encouraged a paralyzed child to walk off a platform against protocol! The child fell and broke his collarbone! We fired her, stripped her license, and made sure she’d never work in healthcare again! She’s dangerous!”

The room erupted into gasps.

Dominic didn't turn around. He didn't ask Norah if it was true. Instead, he pulled a sleek black smartphone from his tuxedo pocket, tapped the screen twice, and connected it to the ballroom’s main audio system.

A recorded voice filled the hall—clear, authoritative, and devastatingly calm. It was Sterling’s voice from an archived deposition.

“...We had to terminate Dr. King’s employment because she refused to follow our budget-driven stagnation protocols. Our insurance policy required patients to remain in long-term rehabilitation care for maximum billing cycles. Dr. King insisted on accelerating patient mobility. When young Leo Miller walked independently after three months instead of two years, our funding from the national medical board was threatened. We had to fabricate the incident report to discredit her license so she couldn't whistleblow...”

The entire ballroom stared at Sterling in absolute horror.

Sterling’s face turned the color of curdled milk. “That... that’s a deep fake! That’s illegal wiretapping!”

“That is an unsealed federal investigation report compiled by Patterson Development’s legal division over the last ten days,” Dominic said, stepping forward until he towered over Sterling. “You blacklisted a brilliant, compassionate doctor because she actually cared about healing children instead of milking insurance companies. And then you had the sheer arrogance to walk into my home and try to smear her name.”

Dominic gestured toward the double doors.

“Marcus. Escort Mr. Sterling out. And make sure the SEC, the state medical board, and every major news outlet in Chicago receives copies of that audio file before midnight.”

“Right away, sir,” Marcus said, stepping forward with two massive security guards who grabbed Sterling by the arms and dragged him, kicking and screaming, out of the mansion.

The heavy doors slammed shut.

For a moment, the ballroom was completely silent. Then, slowly, someone in the front row started clapping. The applause grew louder, swelling into a thunderous ovation as the guests realized the truth.

Ryan looked up at Norah, his eyes shining with pure admiration. “You were a real doctor?”

Norah knelt down to his eye level, a soft tear finally slipping down her cheek. “I still am, captain. I just lost my badge for a little while. But I think helping you walk is the best medicine I’ve ever practiced.”
