Chapter 2 - The Cold Unraveling

The ballroom air, once scented with expensive perfumes and chilled champagne, now felt thick with the static of an impending storm. Vanessa looked at Adrien, her expression one of calculated confusion, as if she were waiting for him to break into laughter. She held the lock of hair tightly, the dark brown curls looking like dead organic matter against her manicured skin.

"Adrien, you're making a scene over a toddler’s haircut," she said, her voice dripping with practiced condescension. "It’s a minor infraction of household etiquette, nothing more."

Adrien didn't blink. He took a step closer, his height and the sheer intensity of his focus making him appear like a predator stalking the very center of his own estate. "I asked you for the hair, Vanessa. And then I’m going to ask you to leave. My security will escort you to your residence."

A collective gasp rippled through the guests. To be expelled from a Hastings engagement party was social suicide; to be dismissed in front of the city's elite was a permanent death sentence for one's reputation.

"You're joking," Vanessa hissed, her composure finally beginning to fray at the edges. "We’re supposed to be married in three months. You wouldn't embarrass me like this because of a maid’s brat."

Adrien reached out—not to strike her, but with the steady, chilling precision of a surgeon—and pried her fingers open. He took the lock of Mia's hair and placed it carefully into his breast pocket, as if it were a fragile piece of evidence.

"You didn't just cut her hair, Vanessa," Adrien said, his voice so quiet that the surrounding guests had to strain to hear. "You humiliated a child in my home. You revealed a cruelty that I can no longer ignore. You are no longer welcome here."

He turned to the head of his security team, a man named Miller who had been standing at the edge of the room. "Miller. Escort Miss Cole to her vehicle. Ensure she doesn't take anything that doesn't belong to her."

"Adrien!" Vanessa shrieked, the mask of the sophisticated socialite completely shattered. "You’ll regret this! You think you’re so righteous? You’re just like them! Cold, arrogant—"

Her voice was cut off as Miller moved in, his grip firm on her arm. She was led out of the ballroom, her silk gown rustling like dead leaves against the marble, her pride shredded. The guests stood in stunned silence, some sipping their drinks with shaking hands, others moving toward the exits, sensing that the night had shifted from a celebration into something far darker.

Adrien turned back to Rosa, who was still kneeling, her eyes wide with terror. He reached down and held out a hand to help her up.

"Rosa," he said, his voice returning to that strange, softened tone. "Take Mia to the staff quarters. I’ll have someone bring up dinner. We aren't finished talking, but tonight, your safety and hers are my only priority."

"Mr. Hastings, I... I can't stay," Rosa stammered. "I’m sorry, I’ll resign. I’ll pack our things."

"You aren't resigning," Adrien said. "And you aren't going anywhere until I say so."
