Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the DNA

Later that night, the mansion was silent, save for the hum of the cooling systems and the distant sound of the city. Adrien sat in his private study, the door locked. On his desk sat the small lock of hair and an old, faded photograph of his sister, Elena.
The resemblance was too striking to be a coincidence. The stubborn tilt of the chin, the unique golden flecks in the eyes, the way the child held her ground even when terrified. But Elena had died. He had seen the police reports, the photos of the wreck, the death certificates. He had buried his sister.
And yet, his mind kept circling back to the rumors that had circulated before the accident—talk of a secret life Elena was living in a lower-income neighborhood, talk of a child she had hidden from the family’s suffocating expectations. He had dismissed it all as gossip, a way to cope with his resentment toward her for walking away.
He dialed a private investigator, a man he hadn't spoken to in three years—the same man who had handled the legal aspects of Elena's estate.
"I need you to look into a woman named Rosa Delgado," Adrien said, his voice tight. "She’s been on my staff for two years. Check her history. Find out where she got Mia. Everything. Every birth certificate, every school record, every hospital visit."
"Adrien? It’s two in the morning," the PI replied.

"I don't care," Adrien snapped. "Do it. And if you have to pay double to get the files, do it."
As he hung up, he looked at the lock of hair again. He was a man who lived by logic, by the ruthless efficiency of the stock market and the hard lines of architecture. But the child—Mia—had triggered something tectonic in his soul. If he had been wrong about Elena—if there was a piece of her left, living in his house, suffering under the cruelty of his own fiancée—he would burn his empire to the ground to make it right.
