Chapter 5 - The Night Surveillance

Mercedes-Benz headlights swept across the limestone facade of the Hill estate as Mercer’s car parked beneath the grand portico.

Through the security cameras, Alexander and Christina watched as Mercer stepped out of the vehicle, accompanied by two men in dark suits carrying heavy metal briefcases. They weren't medical assistants or junior researchers. They walked with the precise, practiced stiffness of private security operatives accustomed to handling legal intimidation and corporate acquisitions.

“He’s bringing enforcement,” Christina whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. “Mr. Hill, if they realize we know about the sedation logs—”

“They won't get past the foyer,” Alexander interrupted, his voice dropping into absolute ice. He reached into the top drawer of his desk, pulled out a heavy steel-framed Sig Sauer pistol, and checked the magazine with a sharp, mechanical click.

He slid the weapon into the waistband of his trousers and buttoned his jacket.

“Stay here, Christina,” Alexander commanded. “Lock this door from the inside. If I’m not back in twenty minutes, use the encrypted satellite phone in the wall safe to contact my head of security in Manhattan. Tell him to execute Protocol Zero.”

“I’m not hiding in a room while you face them alone,” Christina said, her brown eyes flashing with stubborn courage. “I’m David’s caregiver. I have a right to be in this house.”

Alexander stared at her for a fraction of a second, recognizing the same quiet steel that had made her stand her ground against Mercer the day before. He gave a sharp, curt nod. “Stay behind me.”

They stepped out into the grand hallway just as the heavy front doors opened with a dull click.

Dr. Warren Mercer strode into the foyer, flanked by the two men in suits. His silver hair was perfectly combed, but his face was tight with arrogant certainty. He didn't bother waiting for an invitation.

“Alexander,” Mercer called out, his voice echoing off the marble walls. “I trust you spent the night reflecting on the realities of your son’s condition. My associates and I are here to execute the formal transfer of David’s guardianship to the Briar Glen Pediatric Institute. For his own safety.”

Alexander descended the grand staircase slowly, his hands resting casually at his sides, just inches from where the pistol was concealed beneath his jacket. Christina followed half a step behind, her posture rigid.

“Guardianship transfer, Warren?” Alexander asked smoothly, stopping three steps from the bottom. “That’s a rather aggressive administrative step for a routine medical consultation.”

Mercer sneered slightly, gesturing to the two men beside him. “When a patient is subjected to dangerous, unverified physical manipulation by untrained domestic staff, the medical board requires immediate intervention. We are taking David into our direct custody tonight.”

“You’re not taking my son anywhere,” Alexander said.

Mercer stepped forward, his eyes gleaming with cold malice. “You don't have a choice, Alexander. Sign the papers, or we will petition the court for emergency medical seizure based on parental negligence. And trust me—with my testimony, a judge will strip you of your parental rights before sunrise.”

The threat hung in the air, heavy and poisonous.

Alexander didn't flinch. Instead, a slow, dangerous smile touched the corners of his mouth.

“File all the petitions you want, Warren,” Alexander said softly. “Because by morning, you won't be worrying about my parental rights.”

Mercer’s smile faltered. “What are your talking about?”

Alexander pulled the encrypted tablet from his coat pocket and tossed it casually onto the marble floor at the doctor’s feet. The screen glowed brightly, playing the exact digital logs of the chemical sedations, paired with the wire-transfer records from the Cayman shell corporation.

“I’m talking about forty million dollars in insurance fraud, illegal medical experimentation on a minor, and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery,” Alexander said, his voice ringing like a bell through the silent hall. “The federal marshals are already reviewing the files. Your career is over, Warren.”

Mercer stared down at the tablet on the floor, the color draining entirely from his face.
