Chapter 9 - The Walls Come Down

The transformation of the Hill estate was completed during the first week of June, when Alexander ordered the demolition crews to arrive.

For three years, the West Wing had stood as a monument to medical isolation—a cold, heavily fortified bunker of sterile white walls, reinforced glass partitions, and specialized monitoring stations. It was the physical manifestation of Alexander’s grief and Mercer’s deception.

On a bright Tuesday morning, the heavy wrecking ball swung into the exterior masonry of the West Wing, shattering the reinforced glass and tearing down the gray brickwork.

From the lawn, David watched the demolition with wide, fascinated eyes, sitting safely on Alexander’s shoulders while Christina held his small ankles.

“Bye-bye, machines!” David shouted, clapping his hands together as a section of the old medical monitoring room collapsed into a cloud of harmless dust.

“Bye-bye, machines,” Alexander echoed, a profound sense of release settling deep within his chest.

Workers began clearing away the rubble to make space for a sprawling, sunlit greenhouse and an expansive children’s play garden filled with hydrangeas, rosebushes, and a wooden climbing frame. The dark, restrictive architecture of the past was being replaced by open spaces designed for growth, light, and life.

Later that evening, after David had been tucked into his new, brightly painted bedroom in the main family quarters—far away from any clinical equipment—Alexander and Christina sat together on the wide stone veranda overlooking the gardens.

The evening air was warm and fragrant with the scent of blooming jasmine. Fireflies flickered across the darkening lawn, casting tiny points of golden light against the deep green of the trees.

“You actually did it,” Christina said quietly, resting her head against Alexander’s shoulder as they watched the twilight settle over Westchester County. “You tore down the whole wing.”

“It needed to go,” Alexander murmured, wrapping his arm securely around her shoulders. “There was too much history buried in those walls. Too many ghosts. I want David to grow up in a home, not a museum of past mistakes.”

“He’s going to have an incredible childhood,” Christina said, her voice filled with quiet conviction. “He’s already braver than most adults I know.”

“He gets that from the woman who taught him how to stand,” Alexander replied, turning his head to press a soft, lingering kiss to the top of her dark hair.

Christina smiled, closing her eyes as she leaned deeper into his embrace. The cold, distant billionaire who had once terrified every employee in the mansion was entirely gone. In his place was a man who had rediscovered his humanity—and found a love he never knew he was missing.
