Chapter 6 - The Fracture

The scandal broke the following morning.

Front-page headlines in the local business journals featured sensationalized articles: “Billionaire CEO Elliot Grayson Unhinged? Tragic Widow Manipulated by Unknown Single Mother.” Photographs of Elliot standing outside Clara's modest apartment building, taken in secret by Julian's hired investigators, were plastered across the internet.

Clara sat at her small kitchen table, staring at the newspaper in horror. Her phone was ringing constantly with calls from reporters and curious acquaintances. Noah sat on the rug nearby, looking confused and anxious by his mother's distress.

A knock sounded at her door. Clara opened it to find Victoria Grayson standing in the hallway, accompanied by two imposing men in dark suits.

"May I come in?" Victoria asked coldly.

Clara stepped aside, her chin held high despite her pounding heart. "What do you want, Mrs. Grayson?"

Victoria looked around the small, modest apartment with visible disdain before turning back to Clara. She opened her designer leather purse and pulled out a checkbook.

"Elliot is facing a emergency board vote in two hours," Victoria said plainly. "Julian has convinced three major shareholders that Elliot is emotionally unstable and unfit to lead Grayson Harbor Group. You are the weapon Julian is using to ruin my son."

She wrote a number on the check and tore it off, handing it toward Clara. "This is two million dollars. Take your son, pack your bags, and leave Charleston today. If you disappear, Elliot can convince the board that you were merely a temporary acquaintance, and he can salvage his life's work."

Clara looked down at the check. Two million dollars would change her life. It would guarantee Noah’s education, a beautiful home, security forever.

Then she looked up into Victoria’s cold, calculated eyes.

"You really don't know your son at all, do you?" Clara said quietly.

Victoria frowned. "Excuse me?"

"Elliot isn't broken because he's weak," Clara said, her voice rising with sudden, fiercer clarity. "He's broken because he spent his whole life trying to live up to your impossible expectations while ignoring the people who actually loved him! He lost Maggie while chasing corporate deals for you! And now you want me to sell him out too?"

Clara took the check, tore it precisely in half, and let the pieces fall to the floor between them.

"I won't take your money, Mrs. Grayson. But I will stay away from Elliot—not because of your threats, but because I love him enough to not let him lose his father's company."

Victoria gasped slightly at the word love, her composure slipping for a fraction of a second. Clara opened her front door wide.

"Get out of my house."

After Victoria left, Clara collapsed onto her couch, holding Noah tightly in her arms as tears finally spilled over. She wrote a short note, placed it in an envelope, and sent it via courier to Elliot's office.

Elliot, You once told me you felt like a ghost. But you aren't a ghost, Elliot. You are a good, living man who deserves joy. Don't let them take your father's legacy. Fight for what is yours. But you have to do it alone for now. Noah and I will be praying for you. — Clara
