Chapter 8 - Standing in the Rain

That evening, a torrential thunderstorm swept across Charleston.

In her small apartment, Clara sat by the window, watching the rain strike the glass. Noah was already fast asleep in his bedroom, exhausted from the emotional toll of the past few days.

Clara held a cup of tea, her heart heavy with a profound, quiet ache. She had done the right thing by walking away, she told herself. Elliot belonged in his world of wealth and power, and she belonged in hers. But the silence of her apartment felt heavier than it ever had before.

Suddenly, a knock echoed at her door.

Clara started. It was nearly ten o'clock at night. She walked cautiously to the door and looked through the peep-hole.

Her breath hitched.

Standing in the dimly lit hallway, completely drenched from head to toe, was Elliot. He wasn't wearing his executive suit jacket. His white shirt was soaked through, clinging to his chest, his hair plastered against his forehead. In his right hand, he held a bright yellow child’s raincoat. In his left hand, he held a single, perfectly blooming white rose.

Clara threw the door open. "Elliot! What are you doing here? You're dripping wet!"

Elliot didn't answer right away. He stepped across the threshold, bringing the cold air and the scent of rain with him. He looked at her with an intensity that made her core tremble.

"I fired Julian," Elliot said, his voice raw and heavy with emotion. "The board is secured. My mother knows everything. And I handed over daily operational control of the group to my senior managing directors."

Clara stared at him, stunned. "Elliot... why would you do that?"

Elliot dropped the yellow raincoat onto the small entryway table and stepped closer to her, closing the distance between them until she could feel the heat radiating from his wet clothes.

"Because when I stood in that boardroom today, surrounded by billions of dollars and thirty years of legacy, I realized none of it meant anything if I couldn't come home to you," Elliot whispered, his voice cracking.

Tears welled up in Clara's eyes. "Elliot, our lives are so different. The press, your family, the pressure—"

"I don't care about the press! I don't care about society!" Elliot grabbed her hands, bringing them up to his chest so she could feel his heart hammering wildly beneath his ribs. "For three years, Clara, I was a dead man walking. I sat by Maggie’s grave waiting for my own life to end. And then a boy in a yellow raincoat asked me if I needed a family. And a woman with the kindest eyes I’d ever seen offered me an umbrella."

He looked deeply into her hazel eyes, letting his soul show without a single wall or shield.

"I don't want to just survive anymore, Clara. I want to live. I want to make chicken soup with you. I want to go rock hunting with Noah. I want to build a life with you, if you'll have me."

Clara let out a choked sob, the walls around her own heart crumbling entirely. "You're crazy, Elliot Grayson."

"I am," he smiled through his tears. "Crazy about you."

Clara stood on her tiptoes and wrapped her arms around his wet neck, pulling his mouth down to hers. The kiss was deep, desperate, and filled with three years of unspoken grief finally giving way to overwhelming love. Elliot wrapped his strong arms tightly around her waist, pulling her flush against him as if he would never let her go again.

From the hallway doorway, a small figure rubbed his eyes, clutching a stuffed bear.

"Elliot?" Noah asked sleepily, blinking at the bright light. "Are you staying for soup now?"

Elliot broke the kiss, laughing softly as he wiped a tear from Clara's cheek. He knelt down on the wooden floor, unmindful of his wet clothes, and opened his arms wide.

May you like

Noah ran right into his embrace, and Elliot pulled the boy tight against his heart, resting his cheek against Noah’s hair.

"Yeah, buddy," Elliot whispered, looking up at Clara with total devotion. "I'm staying."
