Chapter 10 - Beyond the Tower

Six months later, the city had moved on, and so had we.
The scandals of the past had faded into the background hum of corporate progress, replaced by the successful, transparent launch of the newly restructured Children’s Heart Hospital—now fully funded, ethically managed, and operating under strict oversight boards that ensured patient safety and staff protection above all else.
The board room of Carter Enterprises was quiet on a crisp Saturday afternoon.
The heavy mahogany doors were unlocked. The executive floor was empty, save for two people standing by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sprawling, sunlit metropolis.
I wore a simple, elegant ivory silk dress—no high collars, no long sleeves to hide imaginary flaws, no fear weighing down my shoulders.
Ethan stood beside me, dressed in a sharp black tuxedo that mirrored the one he wore on the night he walked into the wrong dressing room and found a woman trying to hide her broken pieces from the world.
He didn't wear a traditional wedding band of gold. Instead, a sleek, custom platinum band rested on his left ring finger, matching the one catching the sunlight on mine.
We hadn't held a massive, high-society gala with hundreds of senators, reporters, and fake well-wishers. We didn't need a public performance to validate what was real.
Just a small, intimate ceremony on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, surrounded by the few people who loved us for who we truly were, followed by a lifetime of quiet mornings, shared coffee, and absolute, unbreakable trust.
“Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Carter?” Ethan murmured, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin against my shoulder.
I smiled, leaning back into his embrace, watching the distant clouds drift across the horizon.
“I was just thinking,” I said softly, turning my head to press a kiss to his cheek, “about how glad I am that you walked into the wrong room.”
Ethan chuckled—a deep, resonant sound that vibrated right through my chest.
“Best mistake I ever made in my entire life,” he whispered, turning me gently in his arms so he could look down into my eyes.
He leaned in, capturing my lips in a slow, deep, possessive kiss that tasted of forever.

Down below us, the city kept spinning, busy and indifferent to the past. But up here, high above the skyline inside Carter Tower, the shadows were gone.
There was only the light, the future, and the two of us.
