Chapter 2 - The Applause of a Monster

The grand ballroom of Carter Tower was a swirling vortex of wealth, privilege, and artificial light.

As I stepped through the arched double doors with Ethan walking a measured pace behind me, the wall of sound hit me like a physical wave. Laughter echoed off the crystal chandeliers; the clinking of champagne flutes created a steady, glittering percussion; and high-society gossip buzzed through the air like static electricity.

I immediately scanned the room for him.

And there he was.

Dr. Adrian Vaughn stood near the VIP stage, surrounded by three members of the city council and a prominent news anchor. He wore his tuxedo with effortless elegance, his silver-streaked hair styled to perfection, and that dazzling, charismatic smile plastered across his face—the same smile that had convinced me he was a savior when we met two years ago at a medical symposium.

He looked every bit the humanitarian hero. No one looking at him could ever imagine the cold, dead look in his eyes when he shoved me against a kitchen wall because I forgot to iron his favorite silk tie. No one could guess that those surgically precise hands, which supposedly saved children's lives every day, were the exact same hands that left dark, blooming bruises across my ribs.

As if feeling the weight of my stare, Adrian turned his head.

His eyes locked onto mine across the crowded room. For a fraction of a second, the public smile didn't reach his eyes—a brief, sharp flash of warning crossed his expression, reminding me of where I belonged, of the performance I had to maintain.

Then, he saw Ethan Carter walking a step behind me.

Adrian’s expression instantly morphed back into warm, deferential charm. He excused himself from the city councilmen and began cutting through the crowd toward us, his stride confident and commanding.

“Ava, darling, there you are,” Adrian said smoothly as he reached us, sliding an arm around my waist.

Every muscle in my body seized. His arm pressed directly over the bruised ribs beneath my black blouse. A wave of white-hot pain lanced through my torso, stealing my breath, but I forced my facial muscles into a stiff, polite smile.

“I was looking everywhere for you,” Adrian continued, his voice dripping with public affection while his fingers tightened just enough against my side to remind me of the pain. “Mr. Carter, thank you for rescuing her. You know how meticulous Ava is about the schedule—she probably ran herself ragged making sure every last detail of this gala was flawless.”

Adrian’s fingers applied micro-pressure to my ribs. I bit the inside of my cheek hard enough to taste copper, keeping my eyes fixed forward.

Ethan’s gaze dropped to Adrian’s hand resting on my waist.

The temperature in the immediate vicinity seemed to drop ten degrees. The air grew so thick and heavy you could cut it with a knife. Ethan didn't smile. He didn't offer the easy, diplomatic pleasantry expected of a host. Instead, he stared at Adrian’s hand with a cold, terrifying intensity that made even Adrian’s confident smirk falter for a split second.

“Dr. Vaughn,” Ethan said, his voice level and devoid of warmth. “Your hand is pressing rather heavily on Miss Sterling’s side.”

Adrian blinked, momentarily caught off guard by the blunt observation, before letting out a light, nervous laugh. He quickly dropped his arm, though his fingers brushed my hip as he did. “Ah, well, you know how it is. Anxious fiancé syndrome. We’ve been so busy planning the wedding amidst all her corporate duties at Carter Enterprises.”

“Wedding planning,” Ethan repeated, the words rolling off his tongue like venom disguised as honey. “Fascinating. Tell me, Doctor, does wedding planning usually involve such... exhaustive physical demands?”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of suspicion crossing his handsome features. He sensed something was wrong, though he couldn't possibly guess the truth. “I beg your pardon, Mr. Carter?”

“Nothing,” Ethan replied smoothly, maintaining unblinking eye contact with the man who owned my private hell. “Just observing that Miss Sterling looks rather fragile tonight. It would be a tragedy if anything were to happen to her before the ceremony.”

Before Adrian could formulate a response, the lights in the ballroom dimmed, and the deep, resonant chime of the main stage speakers echoed across the room.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please take your seats. Tonight’s program is about to begin.”

“We have to get to the head table,” Adrian whispered, his hand sliding back to the small of my back, his fingers digging into my spine with quiet warning. He flashed one last blinding smile at Ethan. “If you’ll excuse us, Mr. Carter. We look forward to your opening remarks.”

Ethan didn't move an inch. He watched us walk away toward the front tables, his dark eyes burning holes into the back of Adrian’s tuxedo jacket.

As I sat down at the pristine white-clothed table beneath the blinding glare of the spotlights, I knew one thing with absolute, terrifying clarity:

The game had changed. Ethan Carter knew. And a billionaire like Ethan didn't just watch monsters play—he hunted them.
