Chapter 7 - The Final Bullet

By 3:00 AM, the estate had fallen into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Federal strike units, summoned by Marco’s backup protocols, had cordoned off the outer perimeter, arresting the surviving mercenaries and seizing the Chicago syndicate’s encrypted communications arrays. Isabella Romano was transferred under heavy armed guard to a federal holding facility, her dreams of seizing Moretti Holdings shattered into dust.

In the grand study on the second floor, the air was thick with the scent of gunpowder and burnt drywall.

Aleandro stood by the window, watching the federal transport vans drive away through the broken iron gates. His left sleeve was stained with a smear of gunpowder, and a shallow graze along his forearm throbbed dully, though he didn't feel it.

The heavy oak doors opened quietly.

Sophia walked into the study. She had changed out of her cleaning uniform into a simple dark wool sweater and trousers borrowed from the estate’s guest wardrobe. Her dark hair fell loosely around her shoulders.

“The federal agents have finished clearing the lower levels,” Sophia said softly, stopping ten feet from his desk. “Marco said you should let the medic look at your arm.”

“It’s nothing,” Aleandro muttered without turning around. “A souvenir from the courtyard.”

Sophia stepped closer, her footsteps quiet on the Persian rug. “You carry a lot of scars, Mr. Moretti.”

“They come with the title,” he replied bitterly.

“No,” Sophia said, her voice carrying a quiet strength that made him turn around to face her. “Scars come from surviving alone. You built this fortress to keep everyone out, thinking stone walls would protect you. But the people inside your walls were the ones holding the knives.”

Aleandro looked at her. For the first time in his life, he didn't have a tactical response. He had spent thirty years believing that emotion was a liability, that love was a weakness to be exploited by rivals. Yet standing before a woman who scrubbed floors for a living, he felt entirely unmasked.

“And what about you, Sophia?” Aleandro asked, using her first name for the first time. “You live in this world of violence. Why didn't you run the moment the gates were breached?”

“Because,” Sophia said simply, her dark eyes steady and unblinking, “somewhere underneath all this armor, you are a man who stopped to listen to a four-year-old child talk about a clock. A monster wouldn't have done that.”

Aleandro took a slow step toward her. The space between them seemed to vanish.

Before he could speak, a sharp sound broke the stillness of the hallway outside.

Click.

Aleandro’s instincts—honed by decades of betrayal—flashed into overdrive.

From the shadowed alcove near the library doors, a figure lunged forward. It wasn't a federal agent or a dead mercenary. It was one of Isabella’s personal bodyguards who had slipped through the initial sweep, holding a compact Smith & Wesson pistol aimed directly at Aleandro’s chest.

“Die, you bastard!” the gunman roared.

Aleandro moved to intercept, throwing his body across the space between them.

BANG!

The gunshot echoed deafeningly through the study.

The bullet tore through the air, missing Aleandro’s heart by three agonizingly close inches, searing past his ribs and embedding itself deep into the walnut paneling behind him.

At the exact same instant, Aleandro drew his sidearm with blinding speed and fired twice.

Bang! Bang!

The assassin dropped instantly, slumping lifelessly against the bookshelf before hitting the Persian rug.

Silence slammed back into the room like a physical blow.

Aleandro stumbled backward, catching himself against the edge of his desk. He looked down at his side—his shirt was staining dark with fresh crimson where the round had grazed his flesh.

“Aleandro!” Sophia gasped, rushing forward in sheer panic, her hands flying to his chest to check the wound. “You’re bleeding! You’re—!”

“I’m fine,” Aleandro breathed, his voice tight with adrenaline as he gripped her wrists to steady himself. “It’s just a graze. It missed.”

Sophia looked up into his face, tears shining in her dark eyes, her chest heaving with terror. For a moment, the walls of the world collapsed around them. There were no syndicates, no detectives, no corporate empires—only two souls who had stared into the abyss and found each other standing in the light.

Aleandro pulled her gently into his arms, burying his face in her dark hair, holding her as though she were the only real thing left in a world made of glass and smoke.

Sophia wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face against his chest, weeping quietly—not from fear, but from the overwhelming, terrifying realization that they had survived.
