Chapter 4 - The Tipping Point

The annual Sterling Foundation Gala was the highlight of the social season, a night where the city's elite gathered to pay homage to the Sterling name. Elena arrived in a gown of midnight velvet, a stark contrast to the white dress she wore on her wedding night. She felt like a predator in silk.
Julian was on edge, his confidence bruised by Elena’s sudden, quiet compliance over the last few weeks. He hovered close, his hand on her back, whispering threats under the guise of endearments. "Don't think I don't see the games you're playing, Elena. You're a bird in a cage, and cages are meant to be locked."
"I'm not playing games, Julian," she replied, her voice cool and composed. "I'm just finally accepting my role."
She knew the journalist, Sarah, was in the crowd. The plan was set: Elena had planted a flash drive containing the digital copies of the ledgers in Julian’s jacket pocket. She had also fed him a lie—that she had destroyed the originals and that his legacy was finally safe. Arrogant and blinded by his own sense of victory, Julian felt invincible.
The drama reached its breaking point during the keynote speech. Julian stood at the podium, basking in the applause, feeling he had successfully broken the woman he hated. But as he looked down at his phone to check his notes, he saw an alert from his security team: an unauthorized broadcast was occurring on the estate's private network.

Simultaneously, the large screens in the ballroom flickered. Instead of the charity's mission statement, the screens displayed the original, incriminating documents. The crowd gasped. The silence was broken by the sound of sirens approaching the estate.
Beatrice, sitting in the front row, turned a shade of white that rivaled her pearls. Julian stood frozen at the podium, the color draining from his face as he realized he had been played. Elena stood to the side, a small, triumphant smile playing on her lips. She had not only escaped her cage; she had turned the lock on her captors.
