Chapter 5 - The Mask Slips

The ballroom, once a sanctuary of elite approval, had transformed into a theater of carnage. As the digitized documents flickered on the giant screens—proof of money laundering, bribery, and the calculated destruction of the Vance family—the collective gasp of the city’s power brokers was nearly audible.

Beatrice rose from her seat, her poise finally cracking. She didn't scream; instead, she moved with the calculated precision of a cornered viper. She bypassed the security staff, heading straight for the stage, her eyes locked on Julian. But it was too late. The feed hadn't just hit the screens in the room; it had been uploaded to every major news outlet’s server.

Julian, however, was having a breakdown of a different sort. As the realization hit him—that his wife, whom he had treated as a broken, submissive doll, had been the architect of his public execution—he descended into a fit of narcissistic rage.

"You!" he roared, lunging toward Elena, who stood by the velvet curtains. He didn't care about the cameras or the police sirens now wailing closer. "You insignificant piece of garbage! I gave you a life! I gave you the Sterling name!"

Elena didn't retreat. She stood her ground, her chin held high. "You gave me a cell, Julian. And you gave me a motive."

Beatrice lunged at Elena, trying to silence her, but a group of guests—some of whom had been victims of the Sterlings’ past business dealings—intervened, creating a chaotic human barrier. The doors to the ballroom burst open, not with servants bearing champagne, but with federal agents.

The chaos turned into a fever dream. Julian, desperate and delusional, began shouting confessions, believing that if he could just kill the narrative, he could save his life. "I didn't have a choice! She made me do it!" he screamed, gesturing wildly at his mother.

Beatrice turned to him, her eyes cold with betrayal. "You were always weak, Julian. A pathetic, hollow instrument."

Her words were the final nail in their collective coffin. The police took them both into custody—Julian struggling and screaming like a petulant child, Beatrice walking with a stiff, icy dignity that fooled no one. As they were led through the rows of people who had once toasted their success, the flashbulbs of the press illuminated the true nature of the Sterling empire: a house of cards built on lies, finally leveled by the girl they thought they had crushed.
