Chapter 6 - The Corporate Sabotage

While Julian was slowly rebuilding his relationship with us in Evanston, a storm was brewing within the upper echelons of Hartwell Industries.

Julian’s grandfather, realizing he couldn't sway Julian through normal board pressure, decided to take matters into his own hands. Partnering with a hostile rival firm, the Vanguard Group, Arthur Hartwell Sr. orchestrated a quiet proxy coup designed to strip Julian of his CEO title under the pretext of "moral turpitude and family distraction."

The trap was sprung on Wednesday afternoon.

I was at the clinic when my phone buzzed incessantly. It was Arthur Vance, sounding frantic.

"Mrs. Hartwell—Clara—thank God I reached you," Arthur panted over the line. "Mr. Hartwell is locked in an emergency board meeting on the forty-third floor. His grandfather has brought a motion for immediate termination and asset freeze, claiming that the child’s legitimacy is a fabricated scandal designed to embezzle corporate trust funds!"

My blood ran cold. "Embezzle? What are you talking about?"

"They've falsified financial documents, claiming Julian transferred corporate funds to your personal clinic account to hide assets," Arthur explained rapidly. "If the board votes yes, Julian is stripped of his voting rights, and the company will be swallowed by Vanguard by sundown."

I looked down at Rose, who was sleeping peacefully in her carrier beside my desk.

For months, I had wanted nothing to do with Julian’s wealth, his empire, or his world. But I knew the man who had knelt by my daughter’s bassinet and wept. I knew the man who had walked away from corporate greed to find his soul.

They weren't just trying to destroy Julian. They were trying to destroy our family.

"Arthur," I said, my voice dropping into a tone that made the lawyer pause on the other end of the line. "Get my car ready. And prepare a full audit trail of every single dollar deposited into my clinic account—showing it came from my own salary, not a corporate vault."

"What are you planning, Mrs. Hartwell?" Arthur asked nervously.

"I'm going to Whitaker Tower," I said calmly. "It's time to end this once and for all."
