Chapter 4 - The House of Shadows

By Friday night, the tension inside Grayhaven House had reached a boiling point.
The quarterly syndicate review had come and gone. The visiting bosses from New York and Chicago had left with strained smiles and uneasy glances, sensing that the old lion was cornered, even if he still bared his teeth.
In the servants' quarters, Mara sat under the dim desk lamp, her eyes bloodshot, rapidly cross-referencing the encrypted wire transfers from the briefcase with the estate’s internal supply invoices. The math was clean, cold, and damning.
The poison wasn't being introduced by an outside assassin. It was being logged into the medical inventory as standard post-operative heart medication, requisitioned directly by Dr. Marcus and countersigned by Julian Vance.
And the financial trail led straight to an offshore shell company owned by the Moretti syndicate—the very group trying to execute a hostile takeover of Damian’s shipping terminals along the inner harbor.
Tap. Tap.
A soft knock at the door made Mara jump. She closed the laptop instantly and stood up.
When she opened the door, Julian Vance stood in the hallway. He wasn't wearing his usual polished security uniform; he wore a dark tactical turtleneck, his face cast in deep shadows by the overhead sconce.
"Working late, Mrs. Reyes?" Julian asked, his voice smooth, carrying an underlying edge that made Mara’s skin crawl.
"Just finishing the east wing polish," Mara said steadily, keeping her posture small and unassuming—the exact persona she had perfected over two years of servitude.
Julian took a slow step forward, peering past her into the small room where Lila was sound asleep in her cot, clutching Mr. Whiskers.
"The boss has been spending a lot of time calling you into his suite lately," Julian noted, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Mr. Volkov doesn't like company. Especially from temporary cleaning staff. It makes people... curious."
"Mr. Volkov is recovering from a heart condition," Mara replied, keeping her voice flat and dull. "He requires extra dusting in the master study. That is all."
Julian stared at her for a long, uncomfortable moment, searching her face for any sign of deception. Satisfied that she looked like nothing more than a terrified, overworked mother trying to survive, he gave a cold, curt nod.
"Make sure you stay out of the west wing archives tonight, Mrs. Reyes," Julian warned softly. "We have sensitive equipment moving through there. Accidents happen to people who wander where they don't belong."
He turned and walked down the dimly lit corridor, his heavy boots echoing against the stone floor.
May you like
Mara closed the door, her hands shaking. They were moving faster than Damian anticipated. If Julian was securing the archives tonight, it meant the final transfer of the shipping terminal deeds was scheduled to happen before Monday morning.
She grabbed her tablet, slipped it into her cleaning apron, and quietly slipped out of her room. She had to get to Damian before the night watch changed.
