Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Syndicate Within

Through the smoke and flying splinters of the shattered doorway, three dark tactical figures flooded into the room, their suppressed rifles raised and sweeping the corners.
At the front stood Julian Vance, his face twisted into an ugly, triumphant sneer.
"Put the gun down, Damian," Julian called out over the howling wind outside. "You're outmatched, out-financed, and your heart is about thirty seconds away from giving out anyway."
Damian didn't flinch. Standing tall in the center of the dark room, his pistol locked onto Julian’s chest with absolute, terrifying stillness.
"You were my brother-in-arms for nineteen years, Julian," Damian said, his voice echoing with a cold, terminal fury. "I pulled you out of the gutters of South Boston. I gave you this house, this power, this name."
"You gave me orders," Julian spat back. "You built an empire on blood and left the rest of us to starve in the shadows while you played legitimate businessman. The Moretti family offered us a future. You're yesterday's news, Damian."
"Is that why you poisoned my wine?" Mara’s voice cut sharply through the dark from behind Damian’s shoulder.
Julian’s eyes flicked past Damian to catch sight of Mara. A cruel grin crossed his face. "Ah, the cleaning lady. I told you to stay in your room, Mrs. Reyes. Now you get to die as collateral damage in a corporate restructuring."
Julian raised his rifle.
In the fraction of a second before Julian’s finger squeezed the trigger, a bright, flashing pink light suddenly appeared in the hallway doorway behind the tactical team.
A tiny figure in yellow rain boots stood in the shattered frame.
Lila, woken by the thunder and the sound of the explosion, had wandered out of the servants' quarters, clutching Mr. Whiskers in one hand. She didn't understand the guns or the men in black; she only saw that the tall man who gave her strawberry candy was in danger.
"Mama!" Lila’s voice piped up clearly through the silence of the room.
Julian’s enforcer turned sharply toward the doorway, his rifle swinging around to target the child. "Get that brat out of here—"
Bang.
Damian’s pistol roared in the enclosed space. The muzzle flash illuminated the room in a blinding strobe of white light.
The enforcer dropped his weapon and crumpled to the floor.
Before Julian could react, Damian moved with blinding, terrifying speed. He lunged forward across the Persian rug, slamming the butt of his pistol directly into Julian’s jaw with bone-cracking force. Julian staggered backward, tripping over an ottoman, and hit the floor hard, his rifle flying out of his grip.
The third enforcer raised his weapon, but from the shadows of the hallway corridor, a burst of heavy automatic fire chewed up the doorframe.
Cross, Damian’s loyal chief of outdoor security who had been locked out of the comms grid, burst into the suite with four elite loyalists, their weapons trained directly on the remaining intruders.
"Drop your weapons! Do it now!" Cross roared.

The remaining enforcer dropped his rifle to the floor and raised his hands slowly behind his head.
Within ten seconds, the east wing was secure. Julian groaned on the floor, clutching his bleeding jaw, while his men were hauled up by their collars and stripped of their sidearms.
