Chapter 3 - The Hospital Room and the Battle Lines

The sterile white lights of the emergency ward at New York Presbyterian Hospital hummed with quiet urgency.

Grace was immediately whisked away by a trauma and obstetrics team, surrounded by specialists who looked at her emaciated frame and severe dehydration with undisguised horror. I was forced to wait outside in a private consultation room while they performed emergency ultrasounds and administered IV fluids.

Two hours later, Dr. Samuel Vance—a towering, silver-haired obstetrician with kind eyes and an iron-clad reputation—walked into the consultation room holding a thick medical chart.

I stood up instantly, my legs trembling. “Doctor? Is my wife... is my son...?”

Dr. Vance held up a hand, offering a reassuring, albeit grave, smile.

“Your wife is exhausted, malnourished, and suffering from acute psychological trauma, Mr. Caldwell. But she is resilient. And your son—he is fighting. His heart rate is strong, though he’s small for thirty-six weeks. We’re keeping Grace under observation, and we’re going to monitor her closely over the next forty-eight hours. If she stabilizes, we can safely induce or perform a C-section to get the baby out of harm's way.”

The immense weight on my chest lifted just enough for me to breathe.

“Thank God,” I whispered, slumping back into the chair.

“Mr. Vance,” Dr. Vance continued, adjusting his glasses, “before I came in here, hospital security intercepted a call from a private legal firm representing your mother, demanding immediate access to your wife’s medical file and claiming custody rights over any unborn minors under Caldwell family trust provisions.”

I felt a cold rage surge back into my veins. Even from thirty miles away, Evelyn was trying to pull the strings.

“Tell them if they step foot on this floor, I’ll have them arrested for trespassing and accessory to kidnapping,” I said, my voice ice-cold. “And get me Marcus Sterling on the phone.”

Marcus Sterling was the senior partner at Sterling & Vance Corporate Law—the most feared litigator in Manhattan, and a man who owed me a professional debt after I saved his firm from a hostile takeover two years prior.

Within twenty minutes, Marcus’s secure line picked up.

“Ethan? It’s two in the morning. This better be good,” Marcus’s gruff, sleep-roughened voice rumbled through the speaker.

“Marcus, my mother kidnapped my pregnant wife, locked her in a basement for months, and forged medical records to steal my family,” I said without preamble. “I need a legal firewall so thick not even a nuclear bomb can penetrate it. I want a complete asset freeze on Caldwell Meridian Group, an emergency restraining order against Evelyn Caldwell, and criminal indictments filed for kidnapping, assault, and conspiracy.”

There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end. All traces of sleep vanished from Marcus’s voice.

“Mother of God,” Marcus whispered. “Ethan... are you serious?”

May you like

“Dead serious. I’m sitting in New York Presbyterian right now. My wife is recovering from months of imprisonment. My mother is currently trying to assert trust control over my unborn child.”

“Consider it done,” Marcus snapped into action, the corporate shark awakening. “I’m waking up a federal magistrate right now. By sunrise, your mother won’t even be able to buy a cup of coffee without court approval. Send me the police report numbers and the hospital intake records. We’re going to put Evelyn Caldwell behind bars where she belongs.”
