Chapter 8 - A New Dawn

Six months later, spring in Manhattan arrived with an explosion of blossoming cherry trees, warm sunshine, and gentle breezes blowing off the Hudson River.
The living room of our Greenwich Village brownstone was alive with the bright, musical laughter of a six-month-old baby.
Liam was sitting on a plush cream-colored rug in the center of the room, wearing a little yellow romper with little ducks on the sleeves, trying valiantly to crawl toward a wooden teething toy while our golden retriever puppy, Barnaby, watched him with patient, protective amusement.
Grace stood by the kitchen counter, pouring fresh coffee into two mugs, wearing a bright floral sundress that caught the morning light. She looked healthier, stronger, and more radiantly beautiful than the day I had first married her under the stone archway at Caldwell House.
I walked up behind her, wrapping my arms around her waist and resting my chin gently on her shoulder, breathing in the sweet scent of vanilla and baby shampoo.
“What are you smiling at?” Grace asked softly, turning slightly in my embrace to lean her head against my chest.
“I was just thinking about how far we’ve come,” I murmured, kissing her cheek. “And how lucky I am that you didn't give up on us.”
Grace turned completely around, wrapping her arms around my neck, her dark eyes shining with deep, unshakeable love.
“I didn't give up because I knew you’d come for me, Ethan,” she said softly. “You always find a way through the storm.”
Across the room, little Liam let out a triumphant squeak as he finally grabbed his wooden toy, holding it up in the air like a conqueror.

Grace and I both laughed, stepping away from the counter to join him on the floor.
I scooped my son up into my arms, lifting him high into the air as he giggled with delight, while Grace wrapped her arms around both of us. The past was buried where it belonged, the shadows had been chased away forever, and as the morning sun flooded our home with warmth and light, I knew that our true life—our real, unbroken, beautiful life—was finally just beginning.
