CHAPTER 3: THE DISAPPEARANCE FROM KINDERGARTEN

Last Thursday began like any ordinary day in my life. I woke up to the gentle sound of birds chirping outside the window. I prepared breakfast for the family: avocado toast for Mark, and a bowl of cereal and milk for Leo.

At 8:15 AM, I held Leo’s small hand as we walked to his kindergarten, just three blocks away from our house. It was a spectacular autumn morning, the air crisp but flooded with golden sunlight. At the school gates, Leo turned around, flashing a radiant smile that brightened his entire face. I leaned down, kissing the top of his head, where those soft curls framed his bright, intelligent forehead.

"I’ll pick you up early this afternoon, my love," I whispered.

"Okay, Mommy! Remember to buy me the chocolate cookies!" Leo cheered before skipping into the schoolyard, his golden curls flashing like a streak of light among the other children.

I walked home feeling completely at peace. My infant daughter, Lily, was still fast asleep in her crib. I sat down at the kitchen table, opened my laptop, and began working on a graphic design project. The rhythmic clicking of the keyboard blended with the rustling of the leaves in the garden, creating a serene atmosphere. I was utterly oblivious to the fact that at that very moment, a nightmare was quietly unfolding at Leo's school.

At around 11:00 AM, my phone rang. It was Leo’s homeroom teacher, Ms. Clara. Her voice was hesitant, laced with deep confusion.

"Hello, Mrs. Vance. I just wanted to call and quickly double-check... The principal just informed me that Leo’s grandmother came and picked him up. She stated there was an urgent family emergency and that Mark had approved it. But per our security protocol, I wanted to call you to make sure..."

My ears went entirely numb. My mind blanked out for a split second before a wave of icy dread rushed down my spine.

"What did you just say?" I stood up so abruptly that my wooden chair nearly flipped backward onto the floor. "Brenda picked up Leo? I know nothing about this! My husband didn't mention anything!"

"Oh my god," Ms. Clara’s voice began to tremble. "She arrived with a very distinguished-looking gentleman, presented her ID, and insisted Mark had called her directly. Since she is his biological grandmother and listed on the emergency contact form, the front office accommodated her..."

"Which way did she take him?" I screamed into the phone, my chest heaving with a mixture of terror and blinding rage.

"She left about ten minutes ago... in her private car."

I slammed the phone down. My hands were shaking so violently I nearly dropped the device. I immediately dialed Mark. He was in the middle of a high-stakes board meeting with investors, but seeing my consecutive, frantic calls, he answered.

"Honey, what's wrong? I'm in a meeting—"

"Mark! Your mother... your mother just went to the kindergarten and abducted Leo!" I sobbed, pure panic choking the words out of my throat.

"What? What are you talking about? My mother took Leo? I didn't authorize that!" Mark’s tone instantly shifted from professional calm to absolute horror.

"The teacher said she claimed you gave permission! Mark, I have a horrible feeling... What is she going to do to our son?"

"Calm down. Stay home with Lily. I'm going to find her right now. I know exactly where she took him." Mark’s voice turned terrifyingly cold, carrying a lethal anger I had never heard from him before.

I hung up and collapsed onto the kitchen floor. The worst possible scenarios began flashing through my mind. Brenda... that tyrannical woman... she had planned this. She had waited for a day when Mark was at his busiest and I was home caring for a sleeping baby to execute her twisted plan. I looked out the window; the sun was still shining brilliantly, but for me, the sky had completely fallen.
