CHAPTER 6: THE SUNDAY PREPARATION

The next two days in our household passed in an eerie, profound silence. Leo refused to go back to kindergarten; he was deeply ashamed of his bare head. I took a leave of absence from work to stay home with him, buying him an assortment of cool baseball caps and constantly whispering into his ear that he was still the most wonderful boy in the universe.

Mark, meanwhile, became unusually busy. He left early and returned late, spending hours locked inside his home office. When I asked him what he was up to, he simply wrapped his arms around my shoulders and whispered:

"Trust me, sweetheart. My mother crossed a line that cannot be uncrossed. She thinks she can control our lives, control our son, and face zero consequences. I am going to teach her the true cost of cruelty."

I saw a wildfire of determination in Mark's eyes. This wasn't just about seeking justice for Leo anymore; it was about Mark liberating himself from the psychological chains Brenda had wrapped around him his entire life.

As it turned out, Mark had secretly contacted every single member of the extended family: aunts, uncles, cousins, and distant relatives—the exact people Brenda constantly sought to impress with her facade of a perfect family. He invited everyone to the upcoming Sunday dinner at Brenda's estate, claiming he had a monumental family announcement to share. Brenda, seeing her son taking the initiative to gather the entire clan, was absolutely ecstatic. She genuinely believed Mark had come to his senses, realized his "mistake," and that this dinner was going to be a grand gesture of submission where he would publicly validate her actions.

Brenda spared no expense preparing a lavish banquet. The massive mahogany dining table was draped in pristine white silk linens, her finest bone china was brought out, and silver candelabras illuminated the room with a warm, affluent glow. She dressed in a regal royal blue velvet gown, an elegant strand of pearls around her neck, moving among her guests with the triumphant smile of a queen holding court.

"You know," Brenda boasted to an older aunt, her voice dripping with pride. "Little Leo looks absolutely wonderful now. Mark finally got rid of that sloppy, girlish hair. He finally looks like a proper gentleman of this family."

The surrounding relatives nodded in approval, praising Brenda for her firm, unwavering guidance. Brenda’s chest swelled with supreme self-satisfaction.

At exactly 6:00 PM, our family arrived.

I wore a simple, elegant black dress. Mark was dressed in a formal black suit, looking as though he were attending a high-profile ceremony. And Leo... he walked between us, a knit blue beanie pulled tightly over his head. His face was a bit timid, but holding onto our hands, he walked with a quiet strength.

Brenda spotted us and practically floated over with a radiant smile.

"Oh, you're finally here! Come in, come in. Leo, sweetie, why are you wearing a hat indoors? Take it off so everyone can see your handsome new haircut."

Mark calmly stepped between them, blocking her hand.

"Not yet, Mom. Let's wait until everyone is seated at the table."

Brenda let out a soft, dismissive chuckle, assuming Mark was just nursing his wounded pride.

"Very well, have it your way. Everyone, please take your seats!"

The guests filled the long table. The dining room buzzed with laughter, the clinking of champagne flutes, and the lively chatter of a family reunion. Brenda sat at the head of the table—the position of ultimate honor—surveying her little kingdom with absolute contentment. She had no idea that within minutes, the throne she had built on a foundation of tyranny would disintegrate before her eyes.
