Chapter 5 - The Memory in the Storm

Dominic moved across the room in three swift steps, stopping right beside where Harper sat kneeling on the floor. He leaned down, his presence overwhelming, his dark eyes searching her face with fierce intensity.

"What did she give you, Harper?" Dominic demanded, his voice a harsh whisper. "When you saved her that night in the clinic... what did she leave behind?"

Harper swallowed hard, her mind spinning as the pieces of the puzzle began to slam together with violent precision.

"She... she was terrified," Harper stammered, holding Emma’s little hand tightly. "She was four months pregnant. She had a deep knife wound on her forearm. I used my own medical supplies to stitch her up without entering her into the hospital database. I knew if I logged her name, whoever was chasing her would find her."

"And the men who came to the clinic?" Dominic asked.

"Two men in dark suits," Harper remembered, the terror of that night vivid once more. "They had guns. They asked if a high-society woman had passed through. I lied to them. I told them she had caught a bus heading north. I hid her in the basement storage room for six hours until the storm passed."

Dominic’s jaw tightened. "And before she left?"

"She gave me a silver locket," Harper whispered, her eyes widening as the truth hit her like a physical blow. "She told me it was a family heirloom. She said if anyone ever came asking for 'the key to the blue room,' I was only to give it to someone who brought her daughter to me."

Dominic pulled the brass key labeled 408 from his pocket. "Where is the locket now, Harper?"

"It's in my apartment," Harper said, her heart hammering against her ribs. "In a small metal safe under my floorboards in the closet. I never opened it. I didn't even know it could be opened!"

"We go tonight," Dominic said instantly, turning toward the door.

"No!" Harper said sharply, stepping up from the floor, though she kept her voice low to avoid waking Emma. "You can't just barge into my apartment building with armed men! The police, your enemies—they know who you are! If they see your cars near my building—"

"My enemies already know who you are, Miss Lane," Dominic interrupted, turning his head to look at her over his shoulder, his eyes dark and cold. "Do you honestly think you can go back to your quiet life as a waitress after tonight? You pulled my daughter out of a gunfight. You spoke my dead wife's name. The moment Julianna leaves this estate, word will spread through the underworld that Dominic Caruso has a new vulnerability."

Harper felt the ground slip out from under her feet. "Julianna... who is she?"

"Sophia’s younger sister," Dominic replied bitterly. "And the woman my father-in-law is trying to force me to marry to secure the syndicate alliance. She was at the restaurant tonight because she’s been tracking my movements. She wants Emma under her control."

Before Harper could process the weight of his words, a loud crash shattered the silence of the lower floor.

The shrill, piercing sound of an emergency alarm suddenly roared through the compound, red security lights instantly flashing through the windows, casting blood-colored shadows across the timber walls.

Dominic’s reaction was instantaneous. In a fraction of a second, his handgun was in his hand, his body shielding Harper and the bed.

The heavy mahogany doors burst open. Marco, covered in rain and soot, slammed into the room, his gun drawn.

"Boss! We have a breach!" Marco yelled over the siren. "Perimeter fence line three was cut! Multiple vehicles coming up the driveway! It’s the Moretti strike team!"

"How did they find this location?" Dominic growled, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure, deadly rage. "No one has the coordinates to the pine compound!"

"Julianna," Harper whispered, terror gripping her chest as she looked at the flashing red lights. "She knew you were coming here."

Dominic didn't waste a second. He turned to Marco. "Get the armored vehicle ready in the underground tunnel. We evacuate now."

He turned to Harper, his hand gripping her shoulder with iron force.

"Grab Emma," Dominic commanded, his eyes locked onto hers with lethal intensity. "Your quiet life is officially over, Harper. Welcome to my war."
