Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Morettis

The silence on the rain-swept roof was broken by the distant, rising wail of dozens of police sirens echoing through the city streets below.
Don Moretti’s phone began to vibrate violently in his pocket. He pulled it out with shaking hands, staring at the screen. His mouth dropped open in pure, unadulterated horror.
"It's true..." Moretti stammered, his aristocratic composure shattering into utter panic. "Federal marshals... they just raided the main estate! They’ve frozen all offshore accounts!"
"Kill them!" Julianna screamed, her eyes wild with unhinged fury, raising her weapon toward Harper and Emma. "Kill them all now!"
BANG!
A high-powered rifle shot shattered the night sky.
Julianna’s gun flew from her hand, blown to pieces by a sniper rounds fired from a neighboring building. She shrieked in pain, falling to her knees on the wet tar, clutching her bloodied wrist.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!" a booming voice echoed from a dark black police helicopter that suddenly descended from the storm clouds, its blinding searchlight illuminating the entire rooftop in brilliant white light.
Dozens of heavily armed tactical SWAT officers burst through the roof access doors, laser sights cutting through the rain and smoke.
Don Moretti dropped his gun instantly, raising his hands in the air, his face pale and broken. Julianna sobbed hysterically on the ground, surrounded by tactical officers locking steel handcuffs around her wrists.
As the police secured the scene, Dominic stood motionless in the blinding white beam of the helicopter's searchlight. He didn't drop his weapon until the lead federal agent—a tall, gray-haired man who knew Dominic personally—stepped forward and gave him a solemn nod.
"The ledger cleared your name of Sophia's death, Caruso," the agent said over the roar of the helicopter blades. "The Morettis are done. The entire syndicate is being dismantled as we speak."
Dominic slowly lowered his gun, slipping it into his coat.
He turned around to face Harper.
Harper was sitting on the wet roof deck, her back pressed against an air conditioning unit, holding Emma close. Rain washed the soot and blood from her face, her eyes wide with exhaustion and relief.
Dominic walked over to them, dropping to his knees on the wet surface.
He didn't speak. He simply reached out, pulling both Harper and Emma into his massive, warm embrace.
Emma wrapped her arms around her father's neck, but she didn't let go of Harper's hand. She buried her small face against Dominic's shoulder, and for the first time in thirteen months, a soft, clear sound escaped her throat.
She began to cry. Real, healthy, cleansing tears that washed away the nightmare she had carried in silence for over a year.
Dominic held his daughter tight, his own eyes shining with unshed tears, his hand resting gently against the back of Harper’s neck.

"It's over," Dominic whispered, his deep voice trembling with emotion. "It's finally over, little bird."
Harper closed her eyes, letting the tension that had gripped her entire body finally melt away, safe in the warm shadow of the man who had fought through hell to protect them.
