Chapter 8 - The Queen of Blackwood

Six months later.
The ballroom of Blackwood Estate was once again filled with three hundred distinguished guests under the glowing crystal chandeliers.
Harbor leaders, international ambassadors, supreme court justices, and community workers from the Harbor House center stood side by side, raising champagne glasses in a joyful toast.
There were no whips on the wall tonight.
The glass display case where the old antique whip had once sat had been removed. In its place stood a beautiful, illuminated bronze plaque dedicated to the domestic workers and staff of Grayhaven, honoring their dignity and labor.
The grand orchestra played a brilliant, sweeping waltz.
At the top of the grand marble staircase, Malcolm Reeves stood in his finest formal attire, holding a silver staff. He struck the marble floor three times, his voice booming proudly across the quieted room.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Malcolm announced, his eyes shining with happy tears. “Presenting the Vice Chair of the Blackwood Consortium... and the new Lady of Blackwood Estate... Mrs. Ivy Blackwood!”
The room erupted into thunderous applause.
Ivy stepped out at the top of the stairs.
She was breathtaking.
She wore an exquisite, custom-designed royal blue velvet ballgown that cascaded over her full, beautiful curves, embroidered with thousands of tiny silver crystals that caught the light like stars. Her hair was styled in soft, elegant curls, and on her head sat a simple, brilliant diamond tiara.
Standing at the bottom of the stairs, waiting for her, was Ronan.
He looked impossibly handsome in his black tuxedo, his dark eyes fixated solely on his wife as she descended the steps toward him.
When she reached the final step, Ronan extended his hand, leading her out onto the center of the polished dance floor.
“You look like a dream,” Ronan whispered, pulling her close as the orchestra began to play their favorite song.
“I’m not a dream,” Ivy smiled, resting her hand against his broad chest, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart. “I’m real. And I’m never going anywhere.”
Ronan spun her gently under the brilliant chandeliers, the crowd cheering around them.
As they danced, Ivy looked past his shoulder, catching the eye of young Emily Carter, who was standing happily among the guests in a lovely dress, waving at her. Malcolm raised his glass to Ivy from the edge of the floor with a proud, knowing nod.
The maid who had once been whipped for spilling three drops of soup was now the most powerful, beloved woman in the city.
Ronan dipped her low at the conclusion of the song, his lips meeting hers in a deep, passionate kiss that brought the entire ballroom to its feet.
