Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Gate

The rain began to fall just as dusk settled over Lake Forest, washing the asphalt of the estate’s winding private drive in slick, reflective sheets of water.

Inside the main dining hall, a lavish dinner had been prepared by the estate's private chef—simple, nourishing foods suitable for Sophia’s recovery, alongside chicken nuggets and macaroni for Emma, who was currently fast asleep on the plush sofa with her stuffed rabbit clutched under her arm.

Sophia sat across from Dominic at the long mahogany table. The candlelight flickered across the silver cutlery, casting long, dancing shadows against the wood-paneled walls.

“You’re barely eating,” Dominic noted, setting down his fork.

Sophia pushed a piece of grilled chicken around her plate. “My appetite hasn't fully returned. Plus… I keep thinking about what happens next, Mr. Vale.”

“Dominic,” he corrected gently.

She looked up, startled. “Dominic?”

“You’ve lived in my house for two years, and my name has been Mr. Vale to you the entire time. It’s time to drop the formality, Sophia.”

“It feels strange,” she murmured, though a faint blush crept up her neck. “Okay… Dominic. What does happen next? I can't stay in the east wing forever. Once I’m strong enough, I need to get back to work. But… after everything that happened, I don't know if I can stay in the staff quarters.”

Dominic leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. “You aren't going back to the staff quarters. I’ve had my maintenance team gut the entire rear wing. They are installing proper insulation, modern ventilation, and expanding the square footage into a two-bedroom apartment for you and Emma.”

Sophia’s jaw dropped. “You didn't have to do that.”

“I did,” Dominic replied simply. “Because no one working under my roof will ever live in substandard conditions again. That is my failure, and I am correcting it.”

Before Sophia could respond, a sharp, piercing alarm tone echoed through the subterranean security monitors built into the wall cabinet behind Dominic.

The casual warmth in the room vanished in a microsecond.

Dominic’s eyes narrowed. He stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the parquet floor. He punched a sequence into the wall panel, bringing up the exterior camera feeds.

On screen four, the thermal motion detector along the northern perimeter fence flickered red.

A figure clad in black tactical gear was crouched near the tree line, using wire cutters on the secondary security grid.

“Viktor,” Dominic spoke into his lapel communicator, his voice dropping an octave into a lethal, arctic calm.

“Boss, I see it,” Viktor’s voice crackled back instantly. “Sector three. Intruders. Two of them. They bypassed the external sensors using a military-grade signal jammer.”

Sophia’s face drained of all color. She stood up, her legs trembling. “Is it… is it him? Did they find us?”

Dominic didn't answer immediately. He drew a sleek, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol from a concealed shoulder holster beneath his vest, checking the magazine with practiced, fluid precision.

“Sophia, listen to me,” Dominic said, stepping close to her and taking her shoulders in his hands. His grip was firm, grounding, absolute. “Take Emma. Go to the master suite panic room. The keypad code is your birthday followed by zero-one. Lock the door behind you and do not open it for anyone except me or Viktor.”

“Dominic, what’s happening?” she gasped, tears welling in her eyes.

“Someone is trying to break into my house,” Dominic said softly, his dark eyes burning with cold fury. “And they are about to regret every life choice that brought them to my gate.”
