Chapter 5 - A Crack in the Ice

The weeks following that rainy night in the study altered the chemistry of the Russo estate forever.

The invisible barrier between the master of the house and the staff dissolved into something deep, intimate, and electric. Dominic no longer spent eighteen hours a day in his downtown office. He came home every afternoon at four o'clock.

He sat on the kitchen counter while Elena cooked dinner. He listened as Lucia read aloud from her school books. He allowed Valentina to paint his fingernails with clear polish while Mia sat on his lap, chattering endlessly about a squirrel she had seen in the garden.

For the first time in fourteen months, the Russo mansion was filled with light.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, Dominic stood on the back patio overlooking the vast lawns.

In the distance, Elena was running with the three girls, playing a chaotic game of tag. Her laughter floated across the grass—pure, musical, and clear.

"You look like a man who forgot he carries a gun, Boss," a deep voice spoke from the shadows of the patio.

Marco stepped out, holding a cigar. He looked at Dominic, a rare, genuine smile touching his hardened face.

"I haven't forgotten, Marco," Dominic said softly, his eyes never leaving Elena.

"The Cassano family hasn't forgotten either," Marco warned, his tone dropping into serious business. "Old Don Cassano died three days ago. His son, Lorenzo, took over the family. Lorenzo is young, wild, and desperate to prove himself. Intelligence says he’s looking for a target to show the other families he isn't afraid of the Russos."

Dominic’s gray eyes went cold as winter steel. "Lorenzo Cassano is an idiot who thinks violence replaces strategy."

"He knows you've softened, Boss," Marco said carefully. "He knows about the girls coming out of their house. He knows about the new woman."

Dominic turned his head slowly. The atmosphere on the patio plummeted into sub-zero temperatures.

"If Lorenzo Cassano even breathes her name," Dominic said, his voice a low, terrifying growl, "I will burn his entire family line into ash."

"Understood, Boss," Marco nodded gravely. "We’ve doubled the perimeter detail. But be careful. A desperate dog bites hard."

Dominic turned back to the lawn just as Elena tagged Valentina, sending all three girls tumbling into the grass in a heap of arms, legs, and joyful screams.

Dominic walked down the stone steps onto the lawn.

The girls saw him coming and immediately scrambled to their feet.

"Papa! Papa!" Mia yelled, sprinting across the grass and throwing herself at his legs.

Dominic scooped her up effortlessly into his arms, tossing her into the air once before catching her against his shoulder. Lucia and Valentina ran up beside him, grabbing his hands.

"Miss Elena said if we eat all our vegetables tonight, we can sleep in the big tent on the lawn!" Valentina announced excitedly.

Dominic looked over at Elena, who was standing a few feet away, brushing grass off her knees, her cheeks flushed pink from running, her dark hair glowing in the golden afternoon sun.

"Is that so?" Dominic murmured, walking up to her. "A tent on the lawn?"

"It's a very safe tent, Mr. Russo," Elena said with a small, playful smirk. "Canvas and wooden poles."

"I see," Dominic said. He set Mia down, telling the girls to run inside and wash their hands for lunch.

The three children darted off toward the patio, their happy shouts fading into the house.

Dominic stood alone with Elena on the open grass. The autumn breeze swept between them, rustling the leaves of the grand oak trees.

"You look happy today, Elena," Dominic said softly, stepping closer.

"I am happy," Elena admitted, looking up into his dark, handsome face. "I haven't felt happy in a very long time, Dominic."

It was the first time she had called him by his first name without the "Mr. Russo."

Dominic felt his heart slam violently against his ribs. He raised his hand, his long fingers gently touching the side of her face, his thumb tracing the curve of her cheekbone.

Elena didn't pull away. She leaned into his touch, her breath catching softly in her throat.

"You gave my daughters back to me, Elena," Dominic whispered, his gray eyes burning with an intense, raw passion. "And now you're giving me back to myself."

"Dominic..." Elena breathed, her dark eyes searching his face. "This is dangerous. Your world... your life..."

"My world is sitting right here," Dominic rasped, leaning down until his lips were inches from hers. "And I will slaughter anyone who tries to take it from me."

Before she could answer, his mouth covered hers.

The kiss was slow, deep, and agonizingly tender—a collision of two broken souls finally finding peace in the middle of a violent world. Elena wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, surrendering completely to the warmth of his mouth, the scent of cedar and steel, and the absolute, unyielding safety of his arms.

When he finally pulled back, both of them were breathing heavily, their foreheads resting against each other under the golden sky.

"Stay with me, Elena," Dominic pledged against her lips. "Not as a housekeeper. As my wife. As the mother of this house."

May you like

Elena looked into his eyes, tears of joy sparkling on her lashes.

"Yes," she whispered. "Yes, Dominic."
