Chapter 9 - You Are My Sunshine

The church of Saint Peter on the cliffs of Bar Harbor was small, ancient, and built of warm local granite.

On Saturday afternoon, the sun shone through the stained-glass windows, painting brilliant patterns of ruby, emerald, and gold across the wooden pews.

The church was filled with laughter, flowers, and sixty close friends, staff, and loyal family members who had traveled from New York to witness the union of Dominic Russo and Elena Vasquez.

At the front of the altar stood Dominic.

He looked astonishingly handsome in a tailored dark tuxedo, his dark hair neatly combed, his gray eyes fixed on the heavy oak doors at the back of the chapel. Beside him stood Marco, wearing a matching suit, looking proudly at his lifelong friend and boss.

The organ began to play—not a slow, solemn march, but a light, beautiful rendition of a classical hymn.

The doors opened.

Walking down the aisle first were the flower girls: Lucia and Valentina, dressed in matching dresses of pale ivory silk, dropping white rose petals from woven baskets.

Following right behind them, holding a tiny velvet ring pillow with intense, solemn concentration, was five-year-old Mia.

And then came Elena.

A collective gasp echoed softly through the small chapel.

Elena looked like a vision from a dream. Her dress was a simple, breathtaking gown of white lace that flowed gracefully around her, her veil trailing behind her, catching the colored sunlight. Glinting near the hem of her train were three delicate, hand-embroidered silk butterflies in brilliant purple.

Dominic felt the air leave his lungs. His hands trembled slightly at his sides as he watched her walk toward him.

She reached the altar.

Dominic stepped forward, taking her hand in his. Her skin was warm, smooth, and steady.

"You are breathtaking," Dominic whispered, his voice thick with unbridled emotion.

"You look pretty good yourself, Mr. Russo," Elena teased softly, her dark eyes sparkling behind her veil.

The elderly priest stepped forward, his voice echoing warmly through the sacred space.

"Friends and family," the priest began, "we are gathered here today to unite Dominic and Elena in holy matrimony—a union born not only of love between a man and a woman, but of the miraculous restoration of a family."

The ceremony was short, sacred, and deeply emotional.

When the time came for the vows, Dominic didn't read from a prepared card. He held both of Elena’s hands, looking straight into her eyes, speaking from the very depths of his soul.

"Elena," Dominic said, his deep voice carrying through the quiet chapel. "I spent my life believing that strength was built with weapons, walls, and control. When darkness claimed my home, I tried to fight it with power, and I failed. Then you walked through my door."

He squeezed her hands gently.

"You brought song back to my daughters. You brought light back to my life. You showed me that true strength is the courage to love through the pain. I promise to honor you, to protect you, and to love you until my last breath."

Tears streamed down Elena’s cheeks—tears of pure, unadulterated joy.

"Dominic," Elena spoke, her voice clear and resonant. "Six years ago, I thought my heart was buried forever. I thought I would spend the rest of my life living in the shadows of what I had lost. But you and your beautiful daughters gave me a reason to breathe again. You gave me a home. I promise to stand by your side, to share your burdens, and to love you and our girls with everything I am, forever."

"By the power vested in me," the priest smiled broadly, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Dominic, you may kiss your bride."

Dominic didn't hesitate. He pulled Elena into his arms, lifting her slightly off her feet, and kissed her deeply, passionately, under the soaring stone arches.

The chapel erupted into thunderous applause, cheers, and joyous whistles!

Marco clapped loudly, wiping a tear from his eye, while Lucia, Valentina, and Mia cheered at the top of their lungs, throwing handfuls of rose petals into the air!
