Chapter 3 - Safe Harbor in the Shadows

The third-floor executive suite was a world entirely disconnected from the cold, subterranean hum of the kitchen. Persian rugs muffled every footstep, warm golden light spilled from recessed fixtures, and the scent of mahogany and polished leather filled the air.

Dante led Sienna into a spacious master bedroom featuring a king-sized bed wrapped in dark silk sheets and a private fireplace already burning with soft ember light.

"Sit," Dante commanded gently, pointing to a leather armchair near the fire.

Sienna sank into the plush leather, feeling instantly out of place in her stained, torn grey maid's uniform. She looked down at her hands, which were still red from the ice-cold water and covered in soapy residue.

A knock sounded at the door. Lorenzo, Dante’s second-in-command and lifelong friend, stepped inside accompanied by Dr. Evans, a middle-aged physician who had served the Marchetti family for two decades. Lorenzo was tall, scar-faced, and possessed an aura of ruthless discipline, but his eyes softened with shock when he saw Sienna sitting in the chief's private suite, bruised and battered.

"Boss," Lorenzo muttered, casting a dark look toward Dante. "Is it true?"

"Marco," Dante replied curtly. "He tried to turn her into an insider for Romano. When she refused, he laid hands on her."

Lorenzo’s jaw set into a grim line. "I’ll gather the men."

"Not yet," Dante instructed. "If we move too early, Romano will realize the breach has been discovered and fall back into the shadows. I want Marco to think Sienna is terrified, hidden in her basement room, too broken to talk. Lorenzo, sweep Marco’s personal quarters quietly while he sleeps. I want every ledger, phone, and jump drive he owns on my desk in one hour."

Lorenzo nodded once and backed out of the room, shutting the heavy mahogany doors behind him.

Dr. Evans knelt beside Sienna, opening a leather medical kit. For the next thirty minutes, the doctor tended to her injuries—cleaning the cut on her lip, applying a soothing salve to her swollen eye, and gently wrapping her bruised ribs with elastic bandages.

Throughout the process, Dante did not leave the room. He stood near the hearth, glass of scotch in hand, watching every movement of the doctor’s hands as if ensuring no further pain was inflicted upon her.

"She has two cracked ribs and severe soft tissue contusions on her neck," Dr. Evans reported, standing up and packing his instruments. "She needs rest, ice, and strong pain management. No physical labor for at least three weeks, Don Marchetti."

"She won't be doing any labor," Dante said. "Thank you, Doctor. Keep this entirely off the records."

Once the physician departed, the silence returned, heavier now with an unspoken tension between the mob boss and the maid. Dante walked over to a sideboard, poured a glass of warm water, and handed it to Sienna alongside two white pain pills.

"Take these," he ordered softly.

Sienna took the medicine, swallowing it down. "Why are you doing all this for me, Mr. Marchetti? I'm just a servant. In your world, people like me are collateral damage."

May you like

Dante leaned against the mantelpiece, his dark eyes reflecting the flickering firelight. "In my world, loyalty is the only currency that matters. You stood in front of a man with a gun, took a beating, and refused to betray my home. That makes you more valuable than half the captains sitting at my dinner table."

He took a step closer, looking down at her bruised face with an expression that bordered on reverent protection. "And under my roof, no innocent person bleeds for my sins. I promise you, Sienna... Marco Vitali will pay for every mark on your skin."
