Chapter 4 - The Confession of a Judas

The sub-basement of the Castellano estate was a windowless bunker constructed of reinforced concrete, buried thirty feet beneath the manicured lawns. It was a place where secrets were brought to die.

Dr. Aris was tied to a heavy steel chair in the center of the room, illuminated by a single overhead bulb. His tailored white coat was torn at the shoulder, his expensive silk tie askew. His face was pale, sweat dripping from his forehead, but he was attempting to maintain an air of professional indignation.

"Roman! This is an outrage!" Aris shouted as the heavy steel door creaked open. "I have served your family for fifteen years! I treated your father! I delivered those children! To treat me like a common criminal because your grief has driven you mad—"

The sentence was never finished.

Roman stepped into the circle of light, moving with the terrifying speed of a apex predator. He didn't use a weapon. He grabbed Aris by the throat with one massive hand, lifting the doctor and the heavy steel chair two inches off the concrete floor, slamming them back down with bone-shattering force.

CRACK.

The legs of the chair scraped violently against the floor. Aris choked, his eyes bulging, his legs kicking uselessly in the air.

"Thallium," Roman whispered, his face inches from the doctor's. "You used thallium."

Aris's eyes flared with a sudden, uncontrollable flash of absolute panic—a microscopic admission that confirmed everything.

Roman released his grip slightly, allowing just enough air into the doctor's lungs for him to speak, but keeping his hand clamped around his windpipe like an iron vise.

"Who paid you?" Roman demanded, his tone dropping into a hollow, terrifying register. "Who paid you to turn my children into ghosts?"

"You're... you're insane..." Aris gasped, his voice raspy, blood speckling his lips. "It's... it's a genetic disease... I was trying to ease their suffering..."

Roman pulled a heavy pairs of pliers from Val's tactical belt. He didn't offer a second warning. He grabbed Aris's right index finger and squeezed.

CRUNCH.

A blood-curdling shriek of agony echoed off the concrete walls. Aris thrashed in the chair, sobbing, tears and sweat pouring down his face as his shattered finger hung uselessly.

"I have unlimited patience today, Aris," Roman said, his voice icy, mechanical, entirely devoid of mercy. "There are ten fingers, ten toes, and twenty-four hours before sunrise. You will tell me every detail, or I will peel you apart piece by piece."

"STOOOP! PLEASE! GOD, STOP!" Aris screamed, hysterical with pain. "It was... it was the Commission! It was the Moretti syndicate and your uncle Marco!"

Roman froze. His hand holding the pliers did not tremble, but inside his chest, a second betrayal shattered whatever remained of his faith in humanity.

Marco. His father's brother. The man who sat at his right hand during syndicate dinners. The man who had held Roman's shoulder at his wife's funeral four years ago, weeping tears of sympathy for the family's tragic luck.

"Explain," Roman commanded.

"Three... three years ago," Aris sobbed, his body shaking violently. "Marco came to me. He had evidence that I was laundering offshore pharmaceutical funds. He threatened to expose me to the federal prosecutor unless I helped him..."

"Helped him do what?"

"To destroy your line without starting an open war!" Aris wept. "Marco knew that if he killed you outright, the family lieutenants would avenge you and start a turf war that would ruin the business. But if your children died of a mysterious, untreatable genetic illness, you would be broken. You would step down from the Don position out of grief, leaving Marco as the sole heir to the Castellano territory!"

Roman listened to the words, each syllable a drop of liquid poison poured directly into his soul.

Marco hadn't just tried to murder his children. He had orchestrated a three-year psychological torture campaign against his own blood, using the slow decay of four innocent seven-year-olds to break Roman's spirit, waiting patiently for Roman to surrender his empire voluntarily.

"The vials," Roman said, his voice so quiet it sounded like a dying breeze. "What was in the vials today?"

Aris swallowed hard, looking at the floor, unable to meet Roman's eyes. "A final... lethal dose of potassium chloride mixed with organophosphates. Marco got impatient. He wanted them dead by the end of the week so he could push for a leadership vote at the Commission meeting on Friday."

Roman stood up slowly. He handed the pliers back to Val.

"Keep him alive," Roman ordered. "Do not let him die. I want him conscious when I bring my uncle down here."

Roman walked out of the basement, his mind focused with a terrifying, absolute clarity. The grief that had paralyzed him for three years was entirely gone. In its place stood a monster born of a father's vengeful love—a monster that would not stop until the streets ran red with the blood of traitors.
