Chapter 6 - The Shadow Play

For the next four days, the Castellano estate became an impenetrable fortress of deception.
To the outside world, nothing had changed. Black emergency vehicles were seen arriving at the gates late at night, intentionally leaked rumors suggesting the boss's quadruplets were entering their final hours. Roman instructed the estate staff to lower the flags to half-mast on Wednesday morning, creating the illusion of impending tragedy.
Inside the third-floor nursery, however, a miracle was unfolding.
Dr. Nadia's intense chelation therapy was working at a remarkable speed. The heavy metal poisons were being systematically flushed from the children's nervous systems.
On Wednesday afternoon, Thomas was the first to open his eyes.
The clouds covering his pupils had cleared, revealing bright, piercing green eyes that matched his father's. He looked around the room, disoriented, blinking against the soft sunlight streaming through the sheer curtains.
Beatrice was sitting beside his bed, peeling an orange.
Thomas turned his head slowly—a movement that would have been impossible four days ago. His dry, cracked lips moved.
"Bea... trice?" he whispered, his voice thin and scratchy like dry paper.
Beatrice dropped the orange. Her eyes filled with tears as she leaned over the bed, gently cupping the boy's cheek with her warm hand.
"I'm here, baby," Beatrice cried softly. "I'm right here. You're safe now."
"Where's... Daddy?" Thomas rasped, his vision focusing on her face. "The bad doctor... he put dark water in my arms..."
"The bad doctor is gone, Tommy," Beatrice assured him, kissing his forehead. "Your daddy knows everything. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again."
By Thursday evening, all four children were fully conscious.
Gabriel and Lily were sitting up in bed, drinking warm broth fed to them by Beatrice. Chloe, though still weak, was holding a stuffed teddy bear, listening intently as her father sat on the edge of her mattress, reading her a fairytale in a low, gentle voice he hadn't used in years.
Roman held his daughter's small hand, watching her smile at a silly voice he made for one of the story's characters.
The sight of his four children—laughing, looking at him with clear eyes, reaching out to touch his face—sent a wave of profound, overwhelming gratitude through his heart. But beneath that gratitude, a dark, unstoppable storm was gathering.
Val stepped into the room, holding a encrypted tablet.
"Boss," Val whispered, stepping away from the children. "Uncle Marco has just called an emergency meeting of the Five Families at the Grand Plaza Hotel for tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m. He announced to the lieutenants that you are stepping down due to personal tragedy, and that he will assume total control of the Castellano syndicate."
Roman closed the fairytale book softly, setting it on the nightstand. He kissed Chloe's forehead, smoothing her dark hair.
"Keep playing with Beatrice, sweetie," Roman said gently to his daughter. "Daddy has some business to finish tomorrow."
"Will you be back for bedtime story, Daddy?" Chloe asked, her voice clear and sweet.
Roman looked at his four children, then turned to Val, his face transforming into an unreadable mask of cold, absolute vengeance.
"I will never miss bedtime again," Roman said.

He walked out of the room, followed by Val. Down in the garage, twenty black armored SUVs were being loaded with weapons, tactical gear, and a heavy steel crate brought up from the sub-basement.
The hunt was about to begin.
