Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of the Lower Level

Deep beneath the sprawling Gothic architecture of the Moretti estate, hidden away from the marble corridors, the grand ballrooms, and the dangerous politics of the syndicate, lay the domestic quarters.

It was a world entirely separate from the one Lorenzo ruled. While the upper floors gleamed with crystal chandeliers, expensive art, and the constant hum of armed security, the lower level smelled of old paper, baking bread, soothing herbal tea, and lavender.

Sophia sat on the edge of a narrow, neatly made cot in a warm, softly lit room that served as Rosa’s private sitting area. She was dressed in a soft, oversized cotton sweater and warm gray trousers provided by the older housekeeper. A steaming mug of chamomile tea rested between her hands, warming her fingers, though the chill in her bones had not yet entirely vanished.

In the adjoining corner, curled up beneath a thick wool blanket on a small sofa, little Lena was fast asleep. Her breathing was deep and even, the terror of the afternoon finally yielding to the safety of profound exhaustion. A single tear track remained dried against her flushed cheek, but her small hands were relaxed, no longer clutching frantically at the air.

Rosa bustled into the room carrying a small ceramic bowl filled with warm soup, placing it gently on the wooden bedside table.

“Eat some of this, child,” Rosa urged softly, sitting down on the edge of the mattress and wrapping an arm around Sophia’s trembling shoulders. “You’ve had a shock that would break a woman twice your age.”

Sophia took a small sip of the tea, her voice trembling slightly. “I thought we were going to be thrown out, Rosa. Or worse. When Miss Reachi threatened Lena... I didn't know what to do. I was just bringing the tea tray. I didn't mean to hear their conversation.”

“Hush now,” Rosa interrupted, patting her hand reassuringly. “You did nothing wrong. You protected your daughter, and as for that viper... Mr. Moretti handled her exactly as she deserved. The whole estate is buzzing. Word has already reached the captains in the west wing: Valentina Reachi was escorted off the property with her bags before the hour was up, and her family’s contracts have been terminated.”

Sophia’s eyes widened. “Mr. Moretti actually did that? To a woman he was going to marry?”

“Mr. Moretti is a dangerous man, Sophia, but he is a just man,” Rosa said gravely. “He values loyalty above all else. And today, he saw firsthand what that woman was truly made of—and what you and little Lena suffered under her roof.”

Before Sophia could respond, a soft, heavy knock echoed against the wooden door of the quarters.

Rosa stood up quickly and unlocked it.

Standing in the dimly lit hallway was Lorenzo.

He had removed his suit jacket, and his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar. Without the formal armor of his syndicate persona, he looked older, leaner, and remarkably human. He looked past Rosa into the room, his dark eyes instantly finding the sleeping form of little Lena curled up on the sofa.

“Is she sleeping?” Lorenzo asked quietly, his baritone voice pitched low so as not to wake the child.

“Yes, sir, finally,” Rosa replied, stepping aside to allow him entry. “The doctor checked her over. Aside from being shaken up and tired, she’s unharmed.”

Lorenzo stepped into the room. The air felt heavy with the scent of chamomile and safety. He walked slowly toward the corner where Lena slept, standing over the small sofa for a long moment, looking down at the child whose tiny fingers had clutched his black suit with such desperate, world-shattering urgency.

Sophia stood up from the cot, her legs still feeling slightly weak. “Mr. Moretti... you shouldn't be down here. This is the staff wing.”

Lorenzo turned his head to look at her. The harsh, intimidating edge that struck fear into the hearts of rival bosses was entirely absent from his gaze.

“This is my house, Sophia,” Lorenzo said softly. “And tonight, the only people in this house who acted with genuine courage were you and your daughter.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy leather key pouch, placing it gently on the wooden table beside the soup bowl.

“What is this?” Sophia asked, looking at the pouch with sudden apprehension.

“That contains the master key fob for the independent guest cottage located on the western edge of the estate grounds,” Lorenzo explained calmly. “It has two bedrooms, a private kitchen, a secure perimeter fence, and a dedicated security detail assigned exclusively to it.”

Sophia stepped back, shaking her head. “Sir, I cannot accept that. We live in the staff dormitories, we’re fine—we don’t need a cottage.”

“You are not staying in the dormitories anymore, Sophia,” Lorenzo said, his tone carrying an absolute, unbendable authority that left no room for argument. “Valentina had allies among some of the outer staff. Even though she is gone, I will not take chances with your safety or Lena’s. Moving forward, you and your daughter live in the cottage. Your position as head of domestic inventory is confirmed, your salary is doubled effective immediately, and any educational expenses for Lena are now fully covered by the Moretti foundation.”

Sophia stared at him, her chest heaving as overwhelming emotion threatened to choke her words. “Mr. Moretti... I... I don't know how to thank you. I have no way to repay this kind of generosity.”

“You don't owe me a debt, Sophia,” Lorenzo said quietly, turning his gaze back to sleeping Lena. “Your daughter reminded me of something today that I nearly forgot amidst all the power, the money, and the enemies surrounding my life.”

He looked back at Sophia, his dark eyes steady and profound.

“She reminded me what it looks like when someone fights purely out of love, with no regard for self-preservation. That is something money cannot buy.”

Before Sophia could formulate a reply, Lorenzo turned toward the door.

“Get some rest,” he instructed Rosa and Sophia alike. “Tomorrow, we begin cleaning house in earnest. The people who helped Valentina plant her roots in my organization are going to find out what happens when a Moretti cleans house.”
