Chapter 7 - The Master of the House

The morning sun washed over the Moretti estate with a brilliant, golden warmth, belying the violence that had darkened the grounds just hours earlier.

Down in the western guest cottage, Sophia was busy preparing breakfast when a soft knock sounded at the door.

She opened it to find Marco standing on the porch. He looked entirely calm, though his suit jacket was unbuttoned and a faint smell of gunpowder still lingered faintly on his clothes.

“Morning, Sophia,” Marco greeted her with a respectful nod.

“Good morning, Marco,” Sophia said, her eyes flickering anxiously toward the manicured lawns outside. “I heard... I heard noises last night. Shouting. Gunshots near the gardens. Is everything alright?”

“Everything is secure, Sophia,” Marco reassured her immediately, offering a reassuring smile. “Some unscheduled visitors tried to test our perimeter last night. Mr. Moretti and the security team handled it before they even reached the inner courtyard. You and Lena were never in any danger.”

Sophia exhaled a long breath, clutching the edge of the door. “Is Mr. Moretti... is he safe?”

“The boss is fine. He’s actually finishing up in the main study right now,” Marco said. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, heavy envelope. “He asked me to drop this off for Lena. It’s her dragon drawing supplies, plus a little something extra.”

Sophia took the envelope, a small smile touching her lips. “Thank you, Marco. Please tell him... tell him we’re very grateful.”

An hour later, Sophia walked with Lena across the stone pathway leading from the guest cottage toward the main house.

It was the first time Sophia had approached the executive entrance since the day Valentina had poured water over her and threatened her daughter’s life. As they walked up the grand marble steps, a phantom chill brushed against her spine, but looking at Lena—who was skipping happily, clutching a brand-new box of crayons in her small hands—the fear melted away.

The heavy oak doors swung open as they approached, greeting them not with hostility, but with quiet, absolute respect from the guards stationed outside.

They were escorted up the grand staircase and down the eastern corridor—the very corridor where Lena had run in sheer terror weeks ago.

When they reached the double doors of Lorenzo’s private study, Marco knocked once and opened them.

“Come in,” Lorenzo’s voice called from within.

They stepped into the vast, mahogany-paneled room. Lorenzo was sitting behind his desk, reviewing a final set of shipping manifests. When he saw them, he laid his pen down, stood up, and walked around the desk to greet them.

“Good morning,” Lorenzo said, his gaze softening as he looked down at Lena.

“Good morning, Mr. Moretti!” Lena chirped brightly, holding up her new crayon box. “Look what Marco gave me! I’m going to draw your dragon today!”

Lorenzo chuckled—a deep, genuine sound that completely transformed his stern features. “I hold you to that, artist. My study is desperately waiting for some color.”

He looked up at Sophia, noticing the lingering hesitation in her posture.

“Sophia,” Lorenzo said gently. “You don't need to look over your shoulder anymore when you walk these halls. This house belongs to you and your daughter just as much as it belongs to me.”

Sophia looked into his dark, steady eyes and felt the last remaining armor around her heart finally give way. She offered a soft, radiant smile—the first truly free smile she had worn in years.

“I know, Lorenzo,” she said softly.

For the first time, she used his first name without hesitation.

And as the sunlight poured through the tall arched windows of the Moretti estate, illuminating the grand halls, the terrifying mafia boss and the quiet former maid stood side by side, knowing that whatever storms gathered outside their gates, the sanctuary they had built together was unbreakable.
