Chapter 9 - The Final Page

Two months later, the grounds of Malvern House looked breathtaking under the first heavy blanket of winter snow.
The north carriage house was fully renovated, its windows glowing with warm, golden light against the twilight. Inside, the scent of cinnamon and pine filled the air as Toby worked on a massive jigsaw puzzle spread out across the hardwood floor, listening intently to a holiday radio broadcast through his crystal-clear hearing aids.
Up in the main house study, the fire crackled warmly against the chill of the December evening.
Ezra Malvern stood by the large bay window, watching the snow fall over the courtyard. The city of Boston still whispered his name with a mixture of awe and terror, but inside these walls, the silence no longer felt like a tomb. It felt like home.
A soft knock sounded at the library door.
“Come in,” Ezra said without turning around.
The door opened, and Sadie stepped inside. She wore a simple dark blue sweater, her hair falling softly around her shoulders, holding a small leather-bound ledger in her hands.
“Working late?” Ezra asked, turning to face her.
“Not working,” Sadie smiled, walking over to the heavy mahogany desk and placing the ledger down beside his crystal water glass. “Just balancing the books.”
Ezra raised an eyebrow, walking over to inspect it. He opened the cover.
Inside wasn't a list of debts, loans, or security expenditures. It was a handwritten schedule of family dinners, violin lessons for Toby, and weekend trips to the New England Aquarium—written in Sadie’s neat, meticulous handwriting.
At the bottom of the page, she had written a single line: Account balance: Paid in full with interest.
Ezra looked up from the page, his gray eyes locking onto hers. The cold, impenetrable fortress of the mafia kingpin dissolved entirely, replaced by the profound warmth of a man who had finally found something worth protecting more than his own life.
“The ledger looks balanced,” Ezra said softly, stepping closer until he was standing right beside her.
“Is it enough?” Sadie asked, her heart racing not with fear, but with anticipation.

Ezra reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently brushing against her cheek, tracing the contour of her smile.
“It’s only the beginning,” he whispered, pulling her close as the winter snow fell silently outside the glass.
