Chapter 10 - Dawn at Malvern House

The sun rose over Boston Harbor, casting a brilliant, blinding sheet of golden light across the snow-covered slate roofs of Malvern House.

Inside the grand estate, the morning silence was no longer heavy or oppressive. It was alive with the sound of laughter echoing up from the kitchen—Toby arguing good-naturedly with Gideon about the proper way to flip pancakes, while the scent of fresh coffee filled the warm air.

Ezra stood on the private balcony outside his second-floor suite, breathing in the crisp, freezing winter air. The city below him was waking up, its chaotic, endless hustle continuing just beyond the massive iron gates.

He no longer looked at the city like a battleground.

Behind him, the balcony door slid open softly. Footsteps crunched lightly against the frost on the stone tiles, followed by the familiar, comforting warmth of Sadie stepping up beside him, wrapping her arms loosely around his waist.

Ezra covered her hands with his own, pulling her tight against his side.

“You’re going to catch a cold out here without a coat,” Sadie murmured against his shoulder, a playful smile in her voice.

“Let it try,” Ezra replied, his lips curving into a rare, genuine smile as he looked down at the courtyard below, where Toby was already throwing a snowball at Gideon, utterly fearless and entirely free. “Nothing can touch us here.”

The past was buried beneath layers of snow and iron-clad law. The debts were gone. The threats were silenced. And for the first time in his life, the most feared man in Boston realized that true power wasn't found in what you controlled, but in who you loved.

Together, they watched the winter dawn break over the horizon, turning the dark sky into a brilliant field of gold.
