Chapter 8 - The Fire in the Archives

At 3:30 AM, a thin plume of gray smoke began curling upward from the ground-floor archives room of the Vale estate.
It wasn't an accident.
One of Nathan’s remaining loyalists—a corrupt security guard stationed near the rear perimeter—had managed to slip a chemical incendiary device near the wooden filing cabinets containing the syndicate’s historical ledgers before being caught and neutralized by Marcus’s patrol.
The smoke sensors shrieked, their high-pitched alarms slicing through the quiet night.
Upstairs, Claire Bennett bolted awake in her bed, her heart hammering against her ribs. Beside her, Lily stirred, rubbing her sleepy eyes.
“Mommy? What’s that noise?” the little girl asked, her voice small and frightened.
“Stay here, Lily. Don't move an inch,” Claire commanded, throwing a light robe over her shoulders and rushing out into the hallway.
Thick, acrid smoke was already filling the upper corridor. Downstairs, the emergency sprinkler systems had activated in the west wing, but the fire in the archives was spreading toward the main staircase, threatening to cut off the staff quarters entirely.
Claire ran toward the service stairs, coughing as the smoke bit into her throat.
Suddenly, a strong hand gripped her arm, spinning her around.
Dominic Vale stood there, wearing a dark shirt and slacks, his face smudged with soot, his eyes sharp and alert. He wasn't in a wheelchair. He was standing tall, moving with the terrifying, athletic grace of a man in his absolute prime.
Claire stopped breathing for a second, her eyes dropping to his feet before flying back to his face.
“Mr. Vale... you’re—”
“There’s a small fire in the ground-floor archives,” Dominic interrupted, his voice steady and urgent. “A parting gift from one of Nathan’s rats. The main staircase is blocked by smoke.”
“Lily!” Claire gasped, panic seizing her chest. “My daughter is still in the room—”
“I already got her,” Dominic said smoothly.
From behind his shoulder, little Lily peeked out, wrapped securely inside Dominic’s heavy winter jacket, holding her plastic basin like a precious shield.
“Mr. Vale carried me like a superhero, Mommy!” Lily announced proudly, her eyes wide with wonder. “And his legs aren't sleeping anymore!”
Claire stared at Dominic, tears welling in her eyes as the smoke swirled around them. All the months of quiet suffering, all the hidden fears, all the brutal reality of the world she lived in—it all seemed to melt away in the presence of the man standing before her, no longer broken, no longer a prisoner of a chair, but a protector.
“Thank you,” Claire whispered, her voice thick with emotion.
“Get outside, Claire,” Dominic commanded gently, his hand brushing her shoulder for just a fraction of a second. “Marcus has transport waiting near the East Gate. Take Lily to my apartment in Manhattan. Stay there until I clear the house.”
“And you?” Claire asked, searching his face.

Dominic turned toward the staircase where the sound of crackling flames echoed from below. A dangerous, confident smirk touched his lips.
“I have a few loose ends to burn.”
