Chapter 9 - The Tables Turn

By sunrise, the fire had been contained, the smoke cleared, and the Vale estate had returned to its pristine, unblemished appearance—though the interior power dynamics had shifted irrevocably.

In the grand library where Lily had washed his feet weeks ago, Dominic stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the sun rise over the sparkling waters of Long Island Sound.

The Chicago capos had arrived at dawn. The meeting in the basement had been short, brutal, and entirely conclusive. Nathan Cole was gone—shipped off to an undisclosed location overseas, stripped of his wealth, his title, and his freedom. Aaron Mercer was halfway across the Atlantic. Vanessa Hart’s family was scrambling to contain a federal corruption scandal that would dismantle their political dynasty before the month was out.

The Vale syndicate was once again entirely under Dominic’s control. Stronger. Cleaner. Ruthless to its enemies, but fiercely protective of its own.

The heavy oak doors of the library creaked open.

Claire stepped inside, holding a fresh cup of black coffee and a small white envelope. She wore her usual service uniform, but her steps were lighter, her posture more assured than Dominic had ever seen.

“The Manhattan apartment is secured, Mr. Vale,” Claire said quietly, setting the coffee cup down on the mahogany desk. “Margaret and Lily are settling in. Though Lily insisted on bringing her plastic basin with her.”

Dominic turned away from the window, taking a slow sip of the coffee. He looked at Claire, really looked at her—not as a servant, not as a background fixture of a wealthy estate, but as the woman who had kept his humanity alive while everyone else was trying to poison him.

“Thank you, Claire,” Dominic said. “For everything.”

She hesitated, then placed the small white envelope beside the coffee cup.

“What is this?” Dominic asked, raising an eyebrow.

“My resignation, sir,” Claire said softly, keeping her eyes steady.

Dominic’s expression hardened instantly. “Resignation? Why? Did someone on the new security detail disrespect you? Do you need more protection—”

“No, Mr. Vale,” Claire interrupted gently, a faint smile touching her lips. “Nobody disrespected me. And I’m not running away from protection. But... I don't want Lily growing up inside a fortress where men settle disputes with automatic weapons and underground holding cells.”

Dominic fell silent. He looked down at the envelope, realizing the absolute truth in her words. The Vale empire was powerful, but it was built on shadows and blood.

“Where will you go?” Dominic asked, his voice dropping into a rare, vulnerable register.

“Boston,” Claire said. “My sister lives there. She has a bakery near the university. I’m going to help her run it, and Lily is going to start kindergarten in a real school where kids play kickball instead of dodging syndicate wars.”

Dominic walked slowly around the desk until he was standing just inches away from her. The height difference made him tower over her slightly, but there was no intimidation in his posture—only a deep, quiet respect.

“And if I told you,” Dominic murmured, his voice rich with quiet intensity, “that I’m stepping back from the syndicate’s day-to-day operations? That I’m liquidating the overseas holdings, cutting ties with the weapons contracts, and turning the Vale corporation entirely legitimate?”

Claire blinked, her breath catching in her throat. “You... you’re walking away from the underworld?”

“I already walked away from a chair I didn't belong in,” Dominic said, his gray eyes locked onto hers. “Walking away from a life of violence is easy by comparison. Especially if I have a reason to stay clean.”

Before Claire could answer, the library doors swung wide open.

Little Lily burst into the room, holding her plastic basin proudly over her head like a championship trophy, followed closely by Marcus, who looked entirely defeated by the child’s unstoppable energy.

“Mommy! Mr. Vale!” Lily announced triumphantly. “I brought the water! The feet still need waking up!”

Dominic let out a genuine, booming laugh—the kind of laugh that hadn't echoed through the Vale estate in ten years.

He knelt down on one knee, right in front of the little girl, ignoring the dust on the marble floor.

“My feet are wide awake, Lily,” Dominic smiled, resting a hand gently on her pigtails. “In fact, I think I’m ready to take a very long walk.”
