Chapter 5 - Shadows Across the Nursery

The storm outside reached its peak at midnight, rain hammering against the slate roof of the estate with the fury of a dying hurricane.

Upstairs in the master guest suite—a luxurious room with silk wallpaper and a king-sized canopy bed normally reserved for visiting foreign dignitaries—Grace sat in an armchair, watching her daughter sleep. Lily was tucked beneath a heavy down duvet, her little hand still loosely holding the newly mended Mr. Buttons. Grace had spent an hour using a needle and gold thread she had found in the vanity drawer to carefully stitch the bear's belly back together.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Grace jumped, her heart leaping into her throat. She stood up, smoothing her plain gray housekeeper’s apron, and walked quietly to the door, pulling it open an inch.

Dominic Russo stood in the hallway. He had changed out of his formal suit into a dark charcoal sweater and slacks. The cold, lethal aura he carried in the library seemed slightly muted in the quiet dimness of the upper floor, though the sheer power of his presence still filled the hallway.

"Is she sleeping?" Dominic asked, his voice low and rumble-soft.

"Yes, Mr. Russo," Grace whispered, opening the door a little wider. "She was exhausted."

Dominic stepped into the room, his long strides making no sound against the thick carpet. He walked over to the side of the bed and looked down at the sleeping toddler. For a long moment, the ruthless mafia boss who controlled the entire eastern seaboard looked remarkably human, his dark eyes softened by something resembling profound gratitude.

"She saved my life tonight, Grace," Dominic said quietly, keeping his gaze fixed on the child. "If I had taken that injection... I wouldn't have survived the hour."

"She’s just a sweet child, sir," Grace murmured, stepping up beside him. "She doesn't know about plots or power. She just loves her bear."

"That innocent bear uncovered a cancer in my house that has been growing for two years," Dominic replied, turning his gray eyes toward Grace. "Isabella Vance was supposed to marry me in three months to unite our territories. Instead, she was selling my family out to the highest bidder."

Grace looked down at her hands, trembling slightly. "What will happen now?"

"Now, we clean the house," Dominic stated simply. "Norah has already been removed from the property. Isabella is currently being held in the carriage house under guard until my brothers arrive from New York."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, thick envelope made of cream-colored cardstock, extending it toward Grace.

"What is this?" Grace asked, hesitant to touch it.

"A deed to a house in upstate New York, and a trust fund established in Lily’s name," Dominic said firmly. "You won't be folding sheets or scrubbing floors anymore, Grace. You and your daughter are under the protection of the Russo family for as long as you live."

Grace stared at the envelope, tears welling in her eyes. "Mr. Russo... I can't take this. I'm just a housekeeper—"

"You are the mother of the girl who saved my life," Dominic interrupted, his voice leaving no room for refusal. "Take it. It is not a gift, Grace. It is a debt paid."
