Chapter 8 - What the Bear Kept Safe

Later that afternoon, while the house was quiet and the guards were finalizing the perimeter security, Dominic walked down the east wing corridor alone. He stopped outside the nursery room door, looking into the bright, sunny space that had almost become the site of his death.
On the floor near the rocking chair lay a tiny, overlooked piece of paper—a folded scrap of blue glassine wrap that had fallen out of Mr. Buttons' body along with the syringe.
Dominic knelt down, his large hand picking up the tiny scrap. Written on the inside of the wrapper in tiny, precise handwriting was a serial code and a date: MK-9012 / 08-04.
It was the chemical lot number for the compound.
Dominic smiled grimly to himself. Isabella hadn't just hidden the weapon in the bear; she had hidden the paper trail that proved the compound originated from a rogue military lab in Eastern Europe—a lab that Dominic’s brothers had been trying to locate for three years.

He folded the tiny scrap of paper carefully and slipped it into his pocket.
