Chapter 4 - The Clock Ticks Down

The wedding day dawned with blinding, theatrical sunlight streaming across Massachusetts Bay. The Mercer estate looked like something out of a fairy tale. A massive glass-walled pavilion had been constructed on the sprawling rear lawn, carpeted in white velvet and adorned with fifty thousand white roses imported from South America.
Three hundred of the country’s most elite corporate executives, politicians, and socialites filled the pews and tables, dressed in bespoke tuxedos and designer evening gowns.
Backstage in the bridal suite, the atmosphere was a whirlwind of hair stylists, makeup artists, and frantic coordinators.
Sloane stood before the full-length gilded mirror, draped in a custom Vera Wang gown encrusted with thousands of hand-stitched pearls and diamonds. She looked breathtaking. Absolute perfection. A vision of innocence and grace.
Grant stood at the altar in the grand ballroom under a canopy of white orchids, his best friend and business partner standing beside him, adjusting his tie with a nervous grin.
Evelyn stood near the service entrance of the ballroom, dressed in her formal black maid’s uniform, holding a silver tray lined with fresh linen. Her pulse was a frantic drumbeat in her ears.
She checked her watch. 1:45 PM.
Detective Vega had promised that the search warrant would be executed by noon, but as the hours ticked away, no police cruisers had arrived at the gates. Had the judge delayed? Had Sloane’s legal team blocked the warrant?
If the police didn't move before the reception concluded, Sloane would legally become Mrs. Grant Mercer. Once the marriage certificate was signed and filed, the asset transfer clauses would lock into place, and Grant would be legally defenseless against a slow, untraceable poisoning campaign.
Evelyn’s hands trembled against the silver tray. She looked across the sea of smiling, wealthy guests. None of them knew. None of them cared. They were sipping champagne, laughing, and celebrating a union built on murder.
Then, the heavy organ music swelled through the state-of-the-art surround sound speakers.
The double doors at the back of the ballroom swung wide open.
Sloane entered on the arm of her politically prominent uncle. Every head in the room turned. Cameras flashed in rapid succession, creating a strobe-light effect across the white roses and crystal chandeliers. Grant’s face lit up with a warm, genuine smile as his bride glided down the aisle toward him.
Evelyn watched her approach. She watched the way Sloane’s head was tilted at the exact angle that caught the professional lighting. She watched the practiced, angelic curve of her lips.
She is going to kill him, Evelyn thought. Right under this roof, surrounded by hundreds of witnesses, she is going to murder a man who has never done anything except try to make the world better.
Evelyn’s grip on the silver tray tightened until her fingers bruised.

I can't wait for the police, she realized with sudden, absolute clarity. By the time a warrant clears bureaucratic channels, Grant will already have ingested his first dose.
She had to stop it right here, right now, in front of every single person who thought Sloane Halbrook was a saint.
