Chapter 6 - The Confession

Total chaos erupted in the ballroom.
Several high-society guests screamed, dropping their champagne glasses. Security guards reached the platform, unsure whether to tackle Evelyn or assist the sobbing, frosting-drenched bride.
Grant stepped backward, his face entirely drained of color, staring at his new wife with a look of profound horror. "Sloane... what is she talking about?"
Sloane thrashed against the ruins of the cake, her face smeared with white sugar, her eyes wide with animalistic panic. "She's insane! She's a disgruntled employee! Arrest her! Tackle her!" she shrieked, pointing a shaking, buttercream-covered finger at Evelyn. "She's trying to ruin our wedding!"
"Am I?" Evelyn’s voice rang out, steady and commanding, carrying across the silent pavilion with absolute authority. She reached into her pocket with her free hand and pulled out the burner phone, tapping the screen to bring up the high-resolution photograph she had taken in the study just forty-eight hours prior.
She turned the screen toward the crowd, stepping up onto the edge of the dais so that everyone could see.
"This is a photograph taken inside Mr. Mercer's private study two nights ago," Evelyn announced, her voice echoing clearly. "It shows the hidden wall safe behind the antique globe. Inside that safe are three identical glass vials containing a slow-acting cardiac glycoside—the exact substance used to induce fatal heart failure that mimics natural causes. Next to them is a forged post-nuptial asset transfer agreement designed to sign over Mr. Mercer's multi-billion-dollar empire to his loving wife the moment the marriage certificate clears."
Sloane stopped thrashing. Her breath hitched in her throat, and she stared at the phone screen in horror. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her looking like a corpse emerging from a tomb.
"That's... that's a fake!" Sloane stammered, her voice cracking into a high-pitched panic. "She planted it! She hacked the safe! She's a thief!"
"I don't have the combination to Mr. Mercer's private safe, Ms. Halbrook," Evelyn replied coldly. "Only you and the silver-haired man in the charcoal suit do."
At that exact moment, the glass double doors at the entrance of the pavilion burst open.
Heavy tactical boots thudded against the floor. Detective Marisol Vega strode into the ballroom, flanked by four uniformed state troopers and two cybercrime investigators carrying digital evidence bags.
Vega walked straight down the center aisle, her badge gleaming in the bright overhead lights. The crowd parted instinctively before her, whispering in shock.
Vega stepped up onto the dais, ignoring the ruined wedding cake entirely. She walked straight past the trembling, frosting-covered bride and stopped in front of Grant Mercer, who stood frozen like a statue.
"Mr. Grant Mercer?" Vega asked formally.
Grant nodded slowly, dazed. "Yes... I am."
"Detective Marisol Vega, Massachusetts State Police," Vega said, flashing her shield. "We have an active search warrant executed thirty minutes ago at your estate. We recovered the wall safe in your study. Inside, we found the lockbox containing three vials of lethal cardiac toxin and a notarized asset transfer agreement bearing forged signatures."
Vega turned her head slowly, fixing her sharp gaze on Sloane Halbrook, who was now huddled in the ruins of the frosting, shivering uncontrollably.
"Sloane Halbrook," Vega said clearly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit premeditated murder, wire fraud, and forgery. You have the right to remain silent..."
The sharp click of the handcuffs locking around Sloane’s wrists echoed across the ballroom like a gavel coming down in a courtroom.
As the state troopers hauled the billionaire’s bride to her feet—her designer wedding gown stained ruinously with pink sugar and white buttercream—Sloane cast one final, venomous glare toward Evelyn. It was a look of pure, unadulterated hatred that promised vengeance even behind prison bars.
Evelyn didn't flinch. She simply met Sloane's gaze, lowered her chin in a quiet nod, and stepped back down into the crowd.
Silence hung heavy over the ruined pavilion for a long moment. Three hundred guests stood frozen, their champagne glasses untouched, their expensive clothes surrounded by fallen sugar petals.
Then, Grant Mercer turned his head slowly. His eyes found Evelyn standing near the edge of the service staff line.
He walked over to her through the wreckage of the six-tier cake, his expression a complex mixture of shock, grief, and profound, overwhelming gratitude. He stopped just a foot away from her.
"Evelyn," Grant said softly, his voice trembling slightly. "You saved my life."
Evelyn offered a small, tired smile, adjusting the lapel of her black uniform jacket.
"Just doing my job, Mr. Mercer," she said quietly. "Though I think you might need to find a new caterer for your next event."

Grant let out a sudden, breathless laugh that broke the heavy tension in the room. He reached out and shook her hand—not as an employer greeting a servant, but as one human being thanking another for pulling him back from the edge of the abyss.
Behind them, the state troopers led Sloane out through the grand double doors into the cool evening air, ending the fairy tale and beginning the reckoning.
