Chapter 6 - UNMASKING THE PAST

The following week was a blur of police interviews, forensic audits, and legal depositions.

With Clara Harper—the elite forensic accountant Grandma Eleanor had loaned us in spirit, though here it was my own corporate audit team—we tore through every financial document Marissa and her husband had touched.

The findings were staggering.

Over six hundred thousand dollars had been systematically siphoned from the boys’ trust and Valerie’s personal accounts over a three-year period. Marissa had been funding luxury vacations, speculative real estate, and gambling debts under the guise of “family management fees.”

More importantly, the state police reopened the investigation into Valerie’s car crash on the Tappan Zee Bridge.

An independent accident reconstruction expert, hired at my expense, examined the impounded wreck sitting in a salvage yard upstate. The findings confirmed our worst fears: the brake lines had been deliberately severed with a specialized cutting tool—not worn down by neglect, but neatly sliced to fail the moment high hydraulic pressure was applied during an emergency stop in sleety weather.

Marissa didn’t act alone. Her husband, who had fled to Nevada, was arrested at a casino three days later by federal marshals.

While the legal machinery ground them down, my home underwent a transformation that money could never have bought.

I didn't go back to the office the next day. Or the day after that.

I cleared my calendar, handed my CEO duties over to my board-appointed COO with a strict ultimatum that I was taking an indefinite sabbatical, and turned my entire focus inward—toward the two little boys who had been surviving in the wreckage of my absence.
