Chapter 8 - THE NEW DAWN

Six months later, the trial concluded with swift and absolute justice.
Marissa Vance was convicted of first-degree murder, wire fraud, and conspiracy, sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Her husband received twenty-five years for his role in the financial embezzlement and cover-up.
The assets they had stolen were recovered through federal restitution orders and redeposited directly into the newly fortified Carter Family Trust, alongside a newly established foundation in Valerie’s name dedicated to protecting abused children and supporting grieving families.
On a crisp autumn Saturday, exactly two years and six months after Valerie’s passing, I stood on the back patio holding a cup of coffee.
Ethan and Noah were running across the lawn, chasing a golden retriever puppy we had adopted from the local shelter—a dog Rosa had insisted we needed because “a house with two boys is too quiet without a dog barking at squirrels.”
Rosa was sitting at the patio table, organizing school schedules and grocery lists.
She had officially stepped into the role of household manager and family director, with a salary that reflected her true worth and a partnership in our daily lives that money could never buy.
The heavy oak front door of the house stood wide open behind us, letting in the cool, clean breeze of a Westchester afternoon.
I looked down at my watch—not to check the time for a conference call, but simply to see how much daylight we had left to play catch in the yard.
My phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was an email from my corporate board asking when I planned to return to the executive suite.
I didn't open it. I simply pressed Delete, slipped the phone back into my pocket, and walked out across the grass to join my sons in the sun.
