Chapter 6 - The Fall of an Empire

While Vanessa Kensington was breaking down in central processing, Richard Harrington was experiencing his own personal hell on the third floor of the Federal Building in downtown Philadelphia.
He sat in a glass-walled conference room, surrounded by four agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission and two forensic accountants from the Internal Revenue Service.
On the massive digital screen mounted on the wall, a terrifying cascade of financial documents was scrolling by—bank statements, shell company registrations, wire transfers to Switzerland, and fraudulent loan applications.
Richard’s expensive silk tie was loosened, his hair messy, his hands shaking as he poured himself his fifth glass of water.
"Gentlemen, please," Richard pleaded, looking around the room at the unimpressionable faces of the federal agents. "There has been a massive misunderstanding! My accounting firm handled those overseas transfers! I had no direct knowledge of—"
The conference room door swung open.
Harrison Cole walked in, accompanied by Sarah Sterling.
The federal agents immediately stood up, showing Harrison an immense level of professional respect.
"Mr. Cole," the lead SEC investigator said, shaking Harrison's hand. "We’ve reviewed the encrypted files your team submitted this morning. The level of systematic fraud within Harrington Commercial Group is staggering."
"Thank you, Agent Miller," Harrison said politely. "I trust the temporary restraining orders are in effect?"
"Every asset associated with Mr. Harrington is frozen," Miller confirmed. "His corporate accounts, personal real estate, luxury vehicles, and private jet privileges have been revoked."
Richard slammed his hands down on the conference table, standing up, his eyes bloodshot with rage and panic.
"Harrison!" Richard shouted. "This is insane! You're destroying my company! Harrington Commercial employs over three hundred people!"
Harrison slowly walked over to the end of the table, pulling out a leather chair and sitting down. Sarah stood behind him, opening a fresh manila folder.
"Your company is already destroyed, Richard," Harrison said calmly. "The board of directors held an emergency meeting twenty minutes ago. They voted unanimously to remove you as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately."
Richard froze, his breath catching in his throat. "They... they can't do that. I own fifty-one percent of the voting shares!"
"You owned fifty-one percent," Sarah Sterling corrected smoothly, stepping forward and laying a document in front of Richard. "Under Section 4 of your corporate charter, any officer indicted on federal fraud charges forfeits their voting shares to the emergency executive board. The Department of Justice filed the formal indictment ten minutes ago."
Richard fell back into his leather chair as if he had been shot. "No... no, no, no..."
"You thought you were clever, didn't you, Ricky?" Harrison said, using the affectionate nickname Vanessa had used in her text messages.
Richard winced at the name.
"You thought you could drain marital assets, transfer millions to your mistress, leave my sister with an overleveraged mansion, and walk away clean," Harrison continued, his voice dripping with venom. "You thought because Khloe was quiet, because she was gentle, that she was weak."
"Harrison, please..." Richard whimpered, placing his hands together in a desperate prayer motion. "I made a mistake! I was stupid! I was confused! Vanessa seduced me—she manipulated me!"
"You chose her," Harrison corrected coldly. "You chose her over the woman who stood by you through three rounds of IVF, two miscarriages, and years of building your life from nothing. You stood at the top of those stairs today and watched your pregnant wife bleed on the floor, and your first thought wasn't to save her—it was to protect your mistress."
"I was shocked!" Richard cried out, tears streaming down his face. "I didn't know what to do! Is Khloe... how is Khloe? How is the baby?!"
"Do not speak their names," Harrison warned, his voice suddenly dropping into a lethal register that made the federal agents in the room take a step back. "You have lost the right to ever say their names again."
Harrison stood up, gathering his coat.
"What's going to happen to me?" Richard whispered, looking up at his brother-in-law with hollow, terrified eyes.
"You are going to trial, Richard," Harrison said flatly. "You are facing twenty years in federal prison for wire fraud, bank fraud, and tax evasion. And when you get out, you will be a broke, middle-aged ex-con with nothing to your name except the memory of the family you threw away."
May you like
Harrison turned to the lead SEC agent. "Agent Miller, he’s all yours."
As Harrison walked out of the conference room, he heard the metallic click of handcuffs snapping around Richard Harrington’s wrists, followed by the broken, sobbing wails of a man who had traded everything for a lie.
