Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

Six months later. Spring 2026.

The Montgomery County Criminal Courthouse stood tall under a bright blue spring sky. The white marble steps where Khloe had fallen six months earlier were clean, polished, and bathed in golden sunlight.

Inside Courtroom 3B, the gallery was packed to capacity with reporters, society editors, and curious onlookers.

At the defense table sat Vanessa Kensington.

She looked entirely unyielding compared to the glamorous woman who used to grace society magazines. She wore a plain navy prison jumpsuit, her hair pulled back into a messy ponytail, no makeup on her pale, sunken face. Her hands were cuffed at the wrist, connected to a chain around her waist.

Beside her sat a court-appointed public defender, looking thoroughly overwhelmed.

At the prosecution table sat District Attorney Vance, flanked by Harrison Cole, who was acting as special pro bono counsel for the victim's family.

Judge Miller banged his wooden gavel against the block. CLACK! CLACK! CLACK!

"Order in the court," Judge Miller commanded, his stern gaze sweeping over the room before landing on the defendant. "We are here today for the sentencing phase in the matter of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania versus Vanessa Kensington."

The judge pulled a thick document toward him.

"Miss Kensington," Judge Miller spoke, his voice heavy with condemnation. "A jury of your peers has found you guilty of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury to an unborn child, and criminal conspiracy."

Vanessa’s head hung low, a single tear falling onto her jumpsuit.

"Your actions on the steps of this very courthouse six months ago were motivated by malice, greed, and a shocking disregard for human life," Judge Miller continued. "It is a miracle of modern medicine that Khloe Cole and her daughter are alive today. This court intends to send a clear message that such horrific violence will met with the full force of the law."

Judge Miller picked up his pen, signing the sentencing decree.

"For the count of attempted first-degree murder, I sentence you to twenty years in the State Correctional Institution at Muncy," Judge Miller declared loudly. "For the count of aggravated assault, an additional eight years, to be served consecutively. You will not be eligible for parole for twenty-three years."

CLACK!

The courtroom gasped. Twenty-eight years in a maximum-security prison.

Vanessa collapsed against the defense table, wailing hysterical, broken sobs as two female corrections officers unlocked her chains from the chair to lead her away. She looked wildly toward the gallery, searching for anyone who might offer her sympathy, but found only cold, distant stares.

As she was dragged through the side door toward the holding cells, her eyes caught Harrison Cole.

Harrison sat at the prosecution table, impeccably tailored, his face completely calm. He didn't gloat. He didn't smile. He simply watched her disappear behind the heavy iron door, locking the chapter forever.

Thirty minutes later, Harrison walked out of the courthouse onto the sunny marble landing.

Waiting for him near his silver Maybach was Khloe.

She looked radiant, wearing a simple cream-colored trench coat, her hair styled in warm golden waves. She looked healthy, whole, and completely free of the ghost of her past life.

In her arms, wrapped in a soft pink blanket, was baby Hope.

Hope was now seven months old, a chubby, happy baby with big blue eyes and a small tuft of soft brown hair, giggling as she looked up at the sunny sky.

Harrison walked down the stairs, his long stride reaching them in seconds.

"How did it go?" Khloe asked softly.

"Twenty-eight years," Harrison said simply. "She won't be coming back."

Khloe took a long, deep breath of the fresh spring air, letting out a sigh that seemed to release six years of accumulated pain and fear.

"And Richard?" Khloe inquired gently.

"His plea deal was rejected yesterday," Harrison replied. "His trial starts next month. The federal prosecutors are pushing for fifteen years. He’s bankrupt, Khloe. His firm has been liquidated to pay off his creditors and your divorce settlement."

Khloe nodded slowly. She felt no hatred, no anger, no desire for further revenge. The past was gone, burned to ash by the very greed that had created it.

Harrison reached out, gently taking baby Hope from Khloe’s arms.

The little girl immediately squealed with delight, grabbing Harrison’s silk tie with her small hands, pulling it toward her mouth.

"Hey!" Harrison laughed softly, lifting the baby high in the air as Hope giggled wildly under the spring sun. "That's an Italian silk tie, young lady!"

Khloe laughed—a bright, warm, beautiful sound that echoed across the courthouse plaza.

"Come on, Big Brother," Khloe said, slipping her arm through Harrison’s free arm as they walked toward the waiting car. "Let's go home."

Harrison looked down at his sister, then at his niece laughing in his arms, and finally at the bright horizon ahead.

The storm had passed. The empire of lies was destroyed. And in its place, a real family had been born.
