Chapter 3 - The Fractured Foundation

Mark looked between us, his forehead furrowing into deep creases. "Sarah? What's going on? Why aren't you at home with Grace? Why is the kitchen smelling like smoke? Lauren called me saying something crazy happened."

"Ask your sister what she did," I said, my voice shaking as I held out the plastic bag toward him. "Look at this, Mark. Look at what your sister did to our daughter."

Mark took the bag hesitantly. He stared down at the long, thick brown braid coiled inside the plastic like a dead thing. For a second, horror flashed across his features, but almost instantly, his defensive instincts—the ones honed over thirty years of covering for his sister—kicked in.

"Wait... Megan, did you cut Grace's hair?" Mark asked, turning to her, his voice hesitant rather than demanding.

"Mark, it was an accident!" Megan cried, running her hands over her face in a display of dramatic distress. "The girls were playing dress-up! They got gum stuck in Grace’s hair—thick, sticky bubblegum! I tried to cut just the affected part out, but Grace kept squirming and throwing a tantrum. It was an emergency! I was going to call a professional stylist to fix it tomorrow, but Sarah just came in here attacking me!"

"She's lying, Mark!" I screamed, turning on my husband. "Grace told me what happened! Megan told her that her hair was 'too pretty' and that it 'wasn't fair to Hailey'! And there was no gum! Look at the braid, Mark! Is there gum in that braid? Look at it!"

Mark pulled the plastic open and looked at the hair. There was no gum. It was clean, smooth, and smelled faintly of strawberry shampoo.

"Megan..." Mark began, his voice dropping into a tone of deep concern. "There's no gum here."

"Well, it was in the part I had to throw away!" Megan snapped, her story instantly shifting without a hint of shame. "Why are you taking her side over mine, Mark? I’m your sister! I’ve taken care of Hailey and Grace together a hundred times! Do you really think I would hurt my own niece on purpose?"

"She cut her scalp, Mark," I said, stepping between Mark and Megan, forcing my husband to look me in the eye. "Our daughter has a bleeding cut above her ear. She was trembling so hard she couldn't speak. And your sister told her she needed to 'share being pretty.' If you don't stand up for Grace right now, I swear to you, our marriage ends today."

Mark gasped, stunned by the ultimatum. "Sarah, don't say things you don't mean—"

"I mean every single word," I whispered. "I am taking Grace to the urgent care clinic right now to get her head examined and to document the wound for a police report."

"Police report?!" Megan shrieked. "Are you insane?! You’re going to drag the police into a family dispute?! Mark, talk to her! She’s going to ruin my reputation! What will the neighbors say? What will the country club say?!"

"I don't give a damn about your country club," I spat.

"Sarah, wait," Mark reached out, grabbing my wrist gently. "Let's just go home first. Let's talk about this rationally. We don't need to involve the police yet. If Megan made a terrible mistake—"

"It wasn't a mistake!" I snatched my hand back, looking at Mark with a mixture of heartbreak and disgust. "You're doing it again. You've done it your whole life. Every time Megan does something cruel, you make excuses for her. But not this time. Not with my daughter."

I turned on my heel and walked out the door, the sound of Megan's hysterical fake crying echoing behind me, accompanied by Mark's pleading calls of my name.

When I reached my car, I sat in the driver's seat, resting my forehead against the steering wheel. My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears. I wasn't just fighting for Grace’s hair anymore; I was fighting for her safety, her dignity, and the very foundation of our family.

I dialed my sister Lauren.

"Sarah? Are you okay? Where are you?" Lauren answered on the first ring.

"I'm coming back," I said, my voice icy and determined. "Get Grace ready. We're going to the hospital."
