Chapter 8 - The Reckoning in Room 302

Three months later, the court house corridors were cold, gray, and smelled of stale floor wax.

Megan's arrest had sent shockwaves through their social circle. Her mugshot—looking disheveled, furious, and stripped of her glamour—had been leaked to the local press. The scandal was massive, and the family name Richard had tried so desperately to protect was now synonymous with cruelty and child abuse.

In Room 302, the preliminary hearing was in session.

Megan sat at the defense table, wearing an ill-fitting gray suit, her hair pulled back tightly. Her high-priced defense attorney stood beside her, attempting to argue for a complete dismissal of charges based on "lack of intent" and "family discipline disputes."

Evelyn and Richard sat two rows behind Megan, looking aged and broken. They had tried to reach out to Mark dozens of times over the past months, offering money, offering public apologies, anything to make the charges go away. Mark had refused every single call. He had finally woken up from decades of emotional manipulation.

The judge, a stern woman named Justice Vance-Reid, knocked her gavel down with a sharp crack that echoed off the mahogany walls.

"We have reviewed the evidence," Judge Vance-Reid announced, her voice booming through the quiet courtroom. "We have the medical reports detailing the physical injury to the victim. We have the digital communications where the defendant clearly expressed malicious intent to demean a six-year-old child. And most damningly, we have the forensic interview statement from the defendant's own daughter."

Megan flinched as if she had been struck.

"The defense's argument that this was an innocent household grooming accident is not only unpersuasive, it is absurd," the judge continued coldly. "Defendant Megan Vance, your actions demonstrate an appalling lack of emotional maturity, a dangerous capacity for cruelty, and a complete disregard for the psychological well-being of a child placed in your care."

The judge looked over her glasses directly at Megan, who was beginning to hyperventilate.

"The court hereby denies the motion to dismiss," Judge Vance-Reid declared. "Furthermore, in light of the psychological evaluation of the home environment, this court orders a mandatory Child Protective Services supervision order regarding your daughter, Hailey, along with mandatory anger management and psychological therapy for you."

The judge struck the gavel again. "In addition, a permanent two-year Restraining Order is hereby issued. You are to remain no less than 500 feet away from Grace Vance, her home, and her school. If you violate this order by a single inch, you will serve immediate jail time. Court is adjourned."

The courtroom burst into quiet murmurs.

Megan turned toward us, her eyes wide with frantic rage. "Mark! Mark, please! You can't let them do this to me! I'm your sister!"

Mark stood up, adjusting his suit jacket. He looked at Megan, but there was no pain, no hesitation, and no guilt left in his eyes—only total, absolute indifference.

"You're not my sister, Megan," Mark said quietly, his voice echoing in the space between them. "You're just a bully who finally got caught."

Mark turned his back on her, took my hand, and together we walked out of the courtroom, leaving the screams of Megan's indignation behind us forever.
