Chapter 7 - The Hostile Takeover

The room felt like it was shrinking. The air conditioning hummed, a lonely, mechanical sound in the stillness.

"You're not just taking the company," Richard said, his voice finally losing its bite, replaced by a pathetic, thin whine. "You’re destroying our family name. You're making us paupers."

"I am simply placing the assets back where they belong," I replied. "You treated this company like a prize to be looted. I am restoring it as a business to be run."

I stood up, signaling that the meeting—and their tenure—was over. "Effective immediately, the board of directors is dissolved. A new executive team is being flown in from Nashville this afternoon. Your access cards have been deactivated. You have thirty minutes to clear your desks. If you take anything that belongs to the firm, I will have the police waiting in the lobby."

Gregory stood abruptly, his chair toppling backward with a crash. He looked at me, his eyes wide and wild. For a split second, I thought he might lunge, but I noticed the security guard I’d hired standing just inside the doorway, his hand resting calmly on his belt.

"You'll regret this, Olivia," Gregory hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of hatred and defeat. "You think you’ve won, but you're alone. You’ll always be alone."

I looked at him, feeling a sudden, strange sense of lightness. The weight I had been carrying for years—the need to hide, the need to protect, the need to fear—evaporated.

"I’m not alone, Gregory," I said, looking toward the window where I could see the city stretching out, waiting for me to shape it. "I’m exactly where I’ve always been: with the legacy I earned. You’re the one who is about to find out how thin the air is when you have no one else to exploit."

They filed out, a procession of defeated ghosts. I stood in the center of the room, listening to the silence of the office I now owned, feeling the pulse of a future I had finally reclaimed.
