Chapter 9 - The Ghost of Isabela

A month later, the dust began to settle. I returned to the home I had shared with my grandmother—a small, sun-drenched cottage on the outskirts of the city that I had kept perfectly preserved. It was here that I truly processed the last few months.

I sat at the wooden table where I had learned the difference between a seam and a stitch, between a friend and a wolf. I pulled out the small, rusted sewing machine that had been the foundation of the entire empire. It was an antique now, but it still worked perfectly.

There was a knock at the door. I expected one of my lawyers, but when I opened it, I found Elena—the young accountant who had tipped me off about the Nashville assets. She looked nervous, holding a small box.

"I didn't know where else to go," she said. "The new management at the firm... they're cleaning house, and I was on the list. I guess I’m 'tainted' by the previous regime."

I looked at her, remembering the courage it took for her to send those encrypted emails. "You aren't tainted, Elena. You're the reason I had the leverage I needed. You didn't just help me; you helped everyone who worked there."

I invited her in. We spent the afternoon talking—not about spreadsheets or hostile takeovers, but about the future. For the first time, I realized that my grandmother’s legacy wasn't just in the money or the patents; it was in the freedom to choose who I wanted to build alongside. I offered her the position of CFO of the new Mercer Collective. She accepted, and for the first time, the "I" in my plans became a "We."
