Chapter 5 - The Vultures Circle

While I maintained an unbroken vigil outside the ICU, the rest of the world did not stop turning.
By Friday afternoon, word of my sudden appearance at Northwestern Memorial alongside Madison Chen and the dramatic emergency hospitalization of my ex-wife had leaked to the tabloids. The gossip columns were already feasting on the scandal: “Corporate Titan Julian Hayes Caught Between Mistress and Secret Pregnant Ex-Wife!”
My phone buzzed incessantly in my pocket, vibrating with calls from board members, journalists, and corporate rivals eager to see if my personal life would cause cracks in the foundation of Hayes Global Holdings.
At 2:00 p.m., Jonas intercepted me in the hospital cafeteria during a brief twenty-minute break.
“Boss,” Jonas said, handing me a secure encrypted tablet. “You have a problem. Or rather, Victor Sterling thinks he does.”
I glanced down at the screen. Sterling, my primary competitor in the commercial real estate sector, had just called an emergency meeting of our joint-venture board, citing “severe reputational liability” regarding my ongoing family crisis. He was attempting to trigger a clause in our contract to strip me of my voting shares while I was distracted at the hospital.
A cold, razor-sharp focus replaced the raw emotion in my chest.
“He thinks I’m vulnerable,” I said quietly.
“He thinks you’re distracted,” Jonas corrected. “He’s holding a press conference at his downtown offices in an hour to announce a hostile takeover bid for the Meridian project.”
I looked at the tablet, then toward the direction of the ICU where Elena and our newborn son were fighting for their lives. The audacity of men like Sterling—believing that personal tragedy was an invitation to strike—disgusted me to my core.
“Jonas,” I said, handing the tablet back.
“Boss?”
“Connect me to Marcus Sterling at our legal firm. Tell him I want every single asset Victor Sterling owns audited, cross-referenced, and tied up in federal injunctions before the stock market opens on Monday morning. Dig into his offshore holdings in the Caymans. Find every zoning violation, every environmental shortcut, and every bribe his development firm has paid in the last five years.”
Jonas’s mouth curved into a grim, approving smile. “And the press conference?”
“Tell Marcus to draft a public statement announcing that Hayes Global is doubling its philanthropic investment in Chicago’s pediatric and maternity healthcare infrastructure—starting with a ten-million-dollar endowment to Northwestern Memorial in honor of my wife, Elena Hayes.”

Jonas blinked. “Your wife? You’re publicly reclaiming her while the tabloids are tearing you apart?”
“We remarry the second she wakes up,” I said, my tone absolute and unyielding. “Let the tabloids talk. Let Sterling try to build his sandcastle. I am a man at war, Jonas. And anyone who stands between me and my family is about to learn what happens when they cross a line that cannot be uncrossed.”
