Chapter 6 - Awakening

On the fourth night, the steady, rhythmic beeping of the ICU monitor shifted.

I was sitting in the plastic chair beside the bed, my head resting against the mattress, my fingers still intertwined with Elena’s. I hadn't left the room for more than thirty minutes at a time since she arrived.

A soft rustle of sheets made my head snap up.

Elena’s eyelids fluttered.

For a terrifying second, her brows furrowed in confusion, fighting against the lingering fog of heavy sedatives and pain medication. Her chest rose sharply as she tried to pull air through her throat, the oxygen cannula rustling against her upper lip.

“El,” I breathed out, my voice cracking with overwhelming emotion. “El, don't try to move. I’m right here.”

Slowly, painfully, her dark eyes focused. They roamed the sterile walls of the ICU, registered the IV poles, the monitors, and finally landed on my face.

There was no warmth in her gaze at first. Only a profound, exhausted terror.

“Julian...?” Her voice was a dry, raspy whisper, barely audible over the hum of the ventilator equipment.

“I’m here, sweetheart,” I said, reaching up to gently brush a stray lock of hair away from her damp forehead. “You’re safe. You’re at Northwestern Memorial. You had the baby. He’s alive, El. He’s a boy. He looks just like you.”

Tears welled instantly in Elena’s eyes, spilling over her lashes and tracking down her hollow cheeks. She tried to lift her hands, but the weakness in her arms was absolute.

“The... the baby...?” she sobbed, her voice breaking into a ragged plea. “Is he... is he okay?”

“He’s in the NICU,” I reassured her, leaning down to press my forehead gently against hers, careful not to disturb her lines. “He’s small, but he’s breathing on his own. Dr. Thorne says he’s a fighter. Just like his mother.”

Elena let out a long, shuddering sob, her shoulders shaking beneath the thin hospital blanket. “I tried... I tried to keep him safe, Julian. I didn't want... I didn't want you to feel obligated. You had moved on... Madison was in your life... I just wanted to give him a chance at life without breaking what was left of us.”

“Madison meant nothing,” I said fiercely, pulling back slightly to look straight into her eyes, letting her see every fractured piece of my soul. “She was a distraction I used because I was too cowardly to admit that my life ended the day we signed those divorce papers. I didn't know, El. If I had known you were carrying my child, I would have burned the world down before I let you spend a single day of this pregnancy alone.”

Elena searched my face, looking for the lies, looking for the arrogant corporate titan she had walked away from eight months ago. But she found only raw, unadulterated truth.

Slowly, her fragile fingers reached out, sliding across the bedsheets until her hand cupped my cheek, her thumb wiping away a tear I hadn't realized I was shedding.

“You’re really here,” she whispered.

“I’m never leaving,” I swore, capturing her hand and pressing a kiss to her palm. “Never again.”
