Chapter 2 - The Silent Witness

The judge, Justice Halloway, adjusted his spectacles, his brow furrowed as he looked down from the bench. "Young lady," he said, his voice unusually gentle, "why are you here today?"
Lily didn't shrink away. She gripped the tablet tighter, her knuckles white. She looked toward her mother, Elena, who was frantically shaking her head, her face an ashen mask of terror.
"I'm here because Mommy told me to be quiet," Lily said, her voice small but piercingly clear in the unnatural silence of the courtroom. "She told me that if I ever told anyone about the 'secret office' in the basement, we would lose everything. But I don't want to lose everything. I want the lady with the baby to have her house back."
A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Sarah sat frozen, her breath hitching in her throat. She had only met Lily a few times at the park—brief, quiet encounters where she had offered the lonely girl juice boxes and kindness—but she had no idea the child had been watching so closely.
"What secret office, child?" the judge asked, leaning forward.
Lily stepped toward the judge’s bench, the bailiff hesitating before nodding for her to approach. She held up the tablet. "Mommy and Mark—he’s not my daddy, he’s just the man who comes over—they spend hours in the dark room. They print papers and put them in big envelopes. I like to play with my tablet, and I learned how to turn on the 'voice' button. I just wanted to hear my favorite cartoons, but I kept recording them by accident."
Elena surged to her feet, her voice a sharp, jagged shriek. "She doesn't know what she’s talking about! She’s confused! This is a staged stunt!"
"Sit down, Ms. Vance," the judge barked, his face hardening. "If you interrupt this court again, you will be removed in handcuffs. Bailiff, secure that device."

As the bailiff took the tablet, the courtroom felt as though it had shifted on its axis. Mark, who had spent the last hour exuding the smug confidence of a man who had successfully stripped his wife of her dignity and her home, was now sweating. He turned to look at Elena, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure malice. The "mean lady" was no longer smirking; she was trembling, her gaze darting toward the exits.
The judge powered on the device. His eyes scanned the files, his expression darkening with every passing second. The digital evidence was damning—audio logs, time-stamped images of forged signatures, and video clips of Mark and Elena laughing as they discussed how they would "clean Sarah out" before the baby arrived. The courtroom didn't just go quiet; it became a vacuum, waiting for the truth to implode.
